Welcome to the forum jaguar 93 xj6 man,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ40 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Welcome.
Sounds to me like you may have a throttle problem and perhaps an oil leak. Regarding the smell, do you see any oil seepage at the valve cover gasket that might be making it's way to burn on the manifold? Sometimes the screws come loose, but even if the valve gasket needs to be replaced, it's not a huge job.

I also wonder if you have any fault codes on the VCM - Vehicle Control Monitor. Is the check engine light one? Once you turn off the car, turn the key to position II (without cranking, and press the VCM button. Note any faults on the display because that may begin to help point you in the right direction.

Cheers!
Scott
