Need Replacement Speakers -'88 & 90 XJ6
 

Any suggestions for replacing the speakers in these cars, they are very very tired.

Yeah go aftermarket call crutchfield and ask for doc
or google speaker reconning and have your old ones reconed if you want to stay original

If OEM quality+ cheap works for you, I have as many good used door speakers as you need for $10.00 each. The big problem is the kicker speakers below the rear seat: I have never found a good substitute for those, and they are always bad when pulled from parts cars.

If someone knows a direct fit for that application, I'm all ears! Otherwise, I can see if they are still available new, they were still in stock last year. I have a wheel center cap too, one that needs a little silver spray paint will cost you $10.00 and includes the center badge and retaining ring.

crutchfield.com or 800-555-9430 will sell you the correct size speakers. I replaced all of mine through Crutchfield in '97 on my '88 Vanden Plas. The speakers (woofers) beneath the rear seat are most important to replace. With Crutchfield you'll be able to select far better quality speakers, such as Boston Acoustics or Alpine, than you would from Jaguar.

Supposedly 5.25's will fit under the rear seat. I have a pair of tang band 5.25 long excursion subwoofers to install once I get them unpacked and found. I'll let you guys know how that goes.

Are you sure that 5 1/4" speakers will fit in the OEM space beneath the rear seat? I measured the original speaker when I recently removed it and it was 4". I am in the market of replacing those particular speakers and have recently found something in the 4" range, but not as inexpensive as the one you indicated from Parts Express.

The other question I have is whether you need a cross-over for these speakers? I still have the original radio (will eventually be replaced) and not sure if cross-overs for those rear speakers are incorporated within the radio.

Fritter, like I said supposedly they will fit and a few others have fit them. I just got done moving so I haven't had time to try yet and see what mods I'll have to do if any to get them in there. I also have to finish pulling the output shaft bearings for replacement, just not enough time in the day anymore lol. Here is a link to someone that put the 5.25's down there.

Good luck with those output shaft bearings. It's good to have access beneath these cars. Unfortunately, I do not have a lift or some sort of metal ramps so that I can get underneath the car. The majority of my work is above the wheels.

Thanks for the Crutchfield link. I've read that some time ago. The 5 1/4" speakers will require some modification to fit for sure. When I removed my speaker (one was missing) from the rear last week, the size was an exact fit for the 4" within the plastic perimeter assembly.

I have been scouting for something worth while and have found both 4" and 5 1/4" woofer replacements at PartsExpress.com Either will probably do the trick. If and when I do the installation, it will probably be before purchasing a new head unit. New head units have the high and low pass filters already incorporated into them. So far, replacements will use the existing wiring. My ideal purpose is to keep the car looking fairly OEM, sound wise and not pimp it out. That's not my style.

I'm not very knowledgeable on this subject, so here's what little more I can add:

There is no external crossover, all the appropriate signal is sent from the speakers. I don't recall there being much room to fit anything larger (for the rear seat speakers), and the originals I think are 6 ohm impedence and have a limited range frequency response.

Having been through this before and not finding 6 ohm speakers or anything that didn't sound like crap, I'm thinking BRUTAL'S re-cone idea is the best way to go. There are probably local places to get this done, and I'll report back if I find anything out. Please post your results if you find a better alternative.

If you replace with a quality radio and speakers there is no doubt that you'll be more than satisfied with the sound. Unless you're looking to have your radio so loud that it drowns out cars around it, quality 4" woofers under the rear seat will more than do the job once you upgrade the radio and door speakers. Why hassle to modify for larger woofers? Believe me, I upgraded my radio, the door speakers, and the 4" woofers under the seat and the sound is impeccable.

Hey thanks for the reply...I'm definately interested in the center cap for the wheel and maybe the door speakers. I'm wondering about changing the radio too. Others have said that the rears are 4".I am looking into that this week. I spent the weekend working on my '90 XJ40...this winter was brutal! Gas cap cover was broken, tires needed to be rotated and I found the rear hub lower bearing/bushings are shot....oh well....not bad for 199,000 miles.
Let me know how you would like to get paid and delivery of the wheel cap.

Andy, I'll contact you and buy the center cap and maybe the front speakers. Thanks for the delivery on the wipermotor, it came in yesterday. I'm putting in the wipermotor assembly in the '88 on Thursday.

Every single speaker under the backseat I have found has been bad as well. I thought that I was having a run of bad luck.

Crutchfield had the best deal. Blaupunkt GTx402 4" speakers sound just fine. $39.99 plus shipping. Easy install with nice looking grills.

The wiper delay module is unser the dash, passenger's side. Remove the under dash panel and look in the center of the component panel, underneath the bottom of the glovebox. The wiper delay module is a black plasic rectangular box with two harnesses going to it. There is an inline fuse holder in one of the harnesses, and that's the fuse that is blown on your car. It's the only inline fuse holder in that area, you may have to hunt for it a bit because it's a little crowded under there.
