Newbie here with a starting issue..
Hey guys....just got a 93 xj6 today (for cheap in hopes i can fix it)...this is basically what happens..i put the key in the ignition (in park with the doors locked) and turn....and nothing! No cranking from the starter at all...i just turn the key and i can hear the fuel pump...anybody perhaps provide me of a walk through of what i should do? Or perhaps a solution? Thanks in advance....
P.s. my apologizes to the mods if i've posted this in the incorrect thread column... |
Welcome, I hope your battery needs replacement I would go that way first .

Hey Caddy, I appreciate the warm welcome....i have an update..i checked a silver relay/relay for the starter (on the firewall) and made sure that worked first (along with the other relay on the firewall (which they did when appling positive to either 85/86 and grounding 85/86) sprayed contact cleaner where the relays rest and with my digital multimeter i tested for constant which was at 30 ....i then made a jumper cable from 30 to 87 to see if the starter even works (since i don't hear it cranking) and when i did all i hear was a faint hiss/fizz ....i tried it a number of times and that's the sound it made....can i assume at this point that the starter is the culprit?

If you powered it directly, I'd say you found it.

As I recall, the top bolt is a pain. It makes up for the ease of the others. I may be wrong here, so wait for a second opinion, but I believe the top bolt takes a 12 point swivel socket with a long extension. Wait for someone to confirm this. I may be confusing it with a V12 starter.

Your post says you have a '93 XJ6, which does not have a starter relay on the firewall.

1.) What where those relays for that i cleaned? 2.) any idea where that starter is on this model? Thanks so much for everybodys help |
1993 has one gas tank, rectangular headlights and taillights, 15" Roulette wheels with a full hubcap secured by an allen screw.
The 10th digit of the VIN number denotes the year of the vehicle. For a 1993, that would be a "P". If the car is a two door, it's an XJS. |

Obviously the rims could have been changed, just check the VIN. It helps to know what model we are talking about, since the starter relay is not where you described on any 1988 and later XJ6.

ok will do....i'll post it tonight once i get home...sounds corny (and probably not too smart but....) i can't wait to know what kind of jag i got,lol.....:icon_teeth: that's coming from somebody that has plenty of experience with different kinds of vehicles...

Everything else is a car that is foreign to me.

Now that we have the year make model established thanks to JagtechOhio...i hope you will continue to aid me in finding a way to get this vehicle running...it looks too nice to be just parked that's for sure. Question for you kind gents....so with the 1993 Jaguar XJ6...any of those relays on the firewall go to the starter by chance? |
It was moved to the XJ40 forum since you own a XJ40. The XJ40 is model designator used by Jaguar for the 88-94 XJ6. The section you originally posted in is for the previous model. Hope that clears up the confusion for you.
I would pm christo here on the forum or post up in his thread for the JTIS download on your jag. It is a complete factory service manual and will aid you greatly in trying to track down parts and repair the starter system on your jag. |
