Cool No Power/ Follow-up / Solution

1994 XJ6 Sovereign. . . I was asking for help in a previous post "NO POWER" (scroll Down) in short very poor acceleration, cutting back to idle at 50 mph.
I did some internet research; couldn't find much, but there was a video on You-Tube that looked interesting; although it wasn't for a Jaguar but some run of the mill mid 90's brand. It said to remove the coolant sensor sending unit & replace it with a plug. NOT! don't want to do that; but it did lead me to take a look at the sensor, and what did I find? A loose electric connector. So as a quick test before buying a new one I took a couple of mini zip-ties snug up the electric plug-in, , , WALLA! it works. Now my dilemma is! do I cut and waste the 1/2 cent zip ties and buy a new electric pig tail? Oh! poop, can't bring myself to do it, I'm Good.

I didn't used to be a fan of the "zippy tie" but recently I have come to have a fair amount of respect for them. I use them often at work for semi- permanent installations of any number of things and they work quite well. Besides, Many automakers use them in production. I don't see a problem if they help move you down the road.

That coolant temperature connector seems to be an issue on the XJ40. They do sell replacements for about $10 or you can just hit your local salvage yard. I believe it's the same connector that is used on the 95-97 X300 models also.

Hi Harold,

You don't make it clear which connector you were dealing with, but I assume it was the one for the Coolant Temperature Sensor, which has a two-wire connection. That connector is a standard Bosch EV1 type, the same connector used on the fuel injectors. EV1 connectors with or without pigtails are available from hot rod and race shops like summitracing.com, fuel injector sellers and refurbishers, engine tuners, etc.

Here are links to photos showing how I replaced the fuel injector connectors on our '93:

EV1 Connectors Part 1 of 2
EV1 Connectors Part 2 of 2

If it's the coolant temperature gauge sender you were referring to, the one that drives the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster, it uses one wire on a standard spade terminal. You can buy those at any auto parts store along with the appropriate crimping tool. If I recall correctly, on the early XJ40s the wire for the coolant temperature gauge sender was known to short on the hood liner.

Cheers,

Don
