Oil cooler line leak at block

Hi,

Have an oil leak from the oil cooler line at block on a 1988 Jaguar XJ6. Car is in collector condition but from what I’m being told by mechanic fixing such a leak with a new o ring could be a terribly difficult job? He says we can try but on such an old car things can go sideways very quickly and then what? Does anyone have experience with these O-rings and if so are our concerns justified? Could we actually damage the cooler line itself by loosening, prying it to replace O-rings? Further to this do we actually need an OEM o -ring or will a similar size work?

please and thanks

Hello again

My car is a 1988 jaguar xj6 red collector condition that needs an oil leak fixed. Apparently the oil cooler line is leaking at block and could be a difficult fix. Is there any kind of work around to this?
thanks

Oil cooler line 'O'ring seals are a common repair.

I suppose the line could be brittle and crack but the 'O'rings are still available.

Not really hard job i did it twice without much problem, perhaps you could also do the filter housing gaskets while there, they also tend to leak, whole project is cheap and doesn't take much time

Thanks Xjack

That is really good news, really good news. Now just have to find a mechanic to do this procedure.

Cheers

I had this not too long ago, I got the o-rings at my local hardware store. It really was an easy one... Good luck.

I replaced the cooler two weeks ago with the Jag bypass kit.
The cooler hoses are a potential point of failure which gives me heartburn.
Installed a bypass kit and cut and chucked the rear of the two oil hoses and metal pipes.
Removing the cooler itself and the front pipes is more involved and I left for another day.

@Roger

thanks Roger,

Heard of the bypass but didn't know a kit was available? Please where is this available? As a Canadian its frustrating that parts need to come from the USA.

Cheers

The X300 (AJ16) did not have the cooler but used a bypass devise.

The parts will bolt in to the AJ6 housing.

The part numbers of the components in the kit are:
EBC4124 (1 per)
EBC4244 (2 per)
CAC5118 (4 per)

Hi milan,

Just to give some visuals, your oil cooler lines connect to the underside of the oil filter housing and are sealed with the O-rings shown as part 9 in the diagram below. The hose half-brackets are secured by nut part 10 that threads onto a stud on the oil filter housing.

As Bob mentioned, on the X300s (and on the '93-'94 XJ40s), the oil cooler was eliminated and replaced by a "Bypass Pipe," part 4 in the diagram below. It is an aluminum casting that, along with the "Connector" pipes, part 6 (two required) and O-rings, part 7 (four required), simply recirculates the oil back into the crankcase, bypassing the cooler altogether. I believe the bypass pipe requires a longer mounting stud, part 3, since the original cooler hose half-brackets were significantly thinner.

I didn't even bothered with the bypass on my old 40 and XJS and simply removed the oil cooler block entirely and bolted oil filter housing directly to the block using shorter bolts. Worked/works perfectly fine too.

i know this is an old thread:

Having the same oil cooler line leak issue - anyone know the bolt size/length to remove the block and bolt the filter housing directly to the block?

thanks

Could you not remove one bolt, measure it, then deduct the thickness of the oil cooler block (item #1 above) from the total length to get your answer?

If anyone is curious the bolts are 8 x 1.25 and the replacements were 25mm long
