The 94 XJ12 that I picked up a little while ago came with the security system switch set to "off" and without any key fobs (security remotes).

Never to fear, there are many threads in this forum, the XJS forum and other sites detailing how to relearn remotes for the XJ40 and XJS, although all point out that it is a bit hit & miss, sometimes taking several tries to get the security system into learning mode. So patience is key.

For the 1994, the general instructions you commonly see are:

1993-94 XJ6 cars:
1. Turn ignition key ON.
2. Turn security switch OFF (located in center console).
3. Turn ignition key OFF.
4. Turn security switch ON.
5. Cycle security system switch ON/OFF rapidly 4 times (within 5 seconds).
6. Press each transmitter so a total of 5 confirmations are heard.

There are two things not usually mentioned in these instructions, which may not be required but I've seen mentioned elsewhere.

1) I had to be in the car with the doors all closed to get this to work. Will it eventually work with a door open? I don't know. But I tried the sequence many times with the door open with no success. As soon as I closed all the doors, no problem.

2) The security system can be programmed with up to five different remotes. Apparently when re-learning, all five of the memory slots must be filled. So if you have only one remote, press(learn) it five times. If you have two remotes, program the first remote for one slot, then the second remote four more times. etc... Each time you program a remote, the alarm chirps and the interior lights flash. Once you have programmed all five remotes the system gives a slightly different audio cue.

At first I was a little daunted to find a used or new XJ40 remote. Even used ones were quite pricey. But along with eventually running across a like new used XJ40 remote for about $50, I also found a generic remote control from yourkeylessremote.com that they said would work for about $15. So I thought I'd give it a try. Well to cut to the point, it works fine. The generic remote has three other buttons that do nothing with the XJ40 remote, but the main "lock" button works just like the single button on the genuine XJ40 remote. So if you are looking for an inexpensive replacement to your 318Mhz single button XJ40 remote and don't care if it doesn't look OEM, there are options.

Now I can remote lock/unlock/arm and the parking lot lighting and panic alarm work. I tried to set off the alarm with the windows down and waving my arms around inside, but I'm not sure how the interior motion sensors really work. I also struck and bounced the car quite a bit, but nothing. But I did reach in and unlock the door manually, which started the car chirping for a while. Then after that stopped, I opened the door and that caused a full-on horn, klaxon and light show :)

If you go to the YKM site to look for the generic remote, it won't let you search for something as old as an XJ40, but I suspect if you call or contact them via email they can find the correct remote.
