r/r door handle 1993 xj6

r/r door handle outside and inside both limp and unable to open door. I read about plastic fastener that is known to break anyone have info about obtaining this or remaking one? I haven't opened it up yet. Is there something else that would cause this problem?

OK got the answer !

Mechanic just called said it was actuator bad, works when u use key to open doors both inside and out. I can live with that !

hahaha might get a chuckle out of this

Mechanic (friend of mine) just delivered the car and we went out to have a look and chat about any potential issues. He put a new thermo in and rewired sound system and then went on to explain how the actuator was bent on the left rear door and that it seems fine now! Well I laughed and picked up the note I had written out and showed him the the door was actually the RIGHT rear door hahaha, he turned beet red and felt awful but I got a great laugh about it. He's picking up car in the a.m. and will have a look at the proper door hahahaha

If the handles on your car ever do break (almost a certainty on these beautiful machines) you can find them from local wreckers. I have purchased six used handles for my 1994. They ranged in prices from 25.00 to 150.00. I've had two fail and I recently found an purchased a complete set to have as spares just in case. I got all four for $100.00.

They are not that difficult to replace actually. It just takes more time the FIRST time. Be sure to buy a good gasket before you start as its the best time to replace those.

Good luck.

The next time I replace one, I will be taking photos and attempting a "how to" for the forum.

Malibu Dave is spot on. The one glaring weakness is the door handles. I've replaced 2 front handles on my '94 buying new off the internet. Saved ~$100 by splicing existing wiring connectors instead of buying exact matches. You will get proficient at removing and replacing the door panel trim, and a little cursing helps, but otherwise not a big chore.

I am not sure that I understand where the door handles break? Is it the door handle itself or some of the mechanism in the door? Reason I am asking is that I have one that seems limp like OP indicated. It releases the door at the very top of its movement but has no resistance until like the last 1/4 inch or so of travel. Would be interested in learning where the likely problem is and have part available if needed before I take the door panel off.

Here's a picture of the old handle

It seems as though the post that adjust the r/r door was putting to much pressure on the handle itself, I adjusted that. Hope this helps !

Rob I added your pic into the body of your post.

For info, I have an identically broken handle in my desk drawer.

The joys of pot metal. ;)

Swap Right/Left

Is it possible to swap the handles from Right hand side to Left hand side? Then it should be possible to go again for some years.
