Snow / Winter
 

Winter is coming (for us in the Northern Hemisphere).
Here in Boise we have terrible winters, or mild ones. Never seems to be any in-between. My current commute is about 20 miles each way, and most of it is freeway but it backs up easily, especially in inclement weather. Therefore, I often take surface streets home to avoid the traffic. My question is, how do these things do in the snow? I'm no stranger to rear wheel drive, and typically drive a 1965 Ford F100 2WD in the winter with a bunch of heavy crap in the back. I know how to drive in the snow (slow and steady, unlike some of the people in this area), but would like to hear from some of you on experiences driving in it. I have all-season tires on now, but would it be wise to go with studded or snow tires? I know that seems like an obvious answer, but I have never gotten snow or studded tires before. Our snow usually only sits on the roads for a day or two, so snow / studded seem like overkill.
So what is everyone's experiences with snow and XJ40s? Thanks!

Cin uses her car all year round,decent snow tires all 'round,no issues so far.

She can pull out of the driveway,and start up the road with the undertray pushing snow,both rear tires rooster;tailing away! It's the other drivers that make me nervous!

I agree. Its everyone else that you have to watch out for. When I lived out there (Nampa) it seemed like the most dangerous ones were the recent immigrants. I did have a Very Slight problem with black ice going up the hill on McDermott stopped for a school bus, but it was just a wake up call. I loved the use of sand instead of salt there.

Maybe I'll look into a set of tires and keep them ready. I have a set of Series III wheels i could mount them to.

Jerry: I actually live in Meridian now, and (not sure how long ago you moved away) there's an on-ramp at Ten Mile now, which always backs up down the hill. That black ice makes it tricky when you get stopped. I work out off Gowen Rd. which they never plow until late, and it gets a little sketchy. Like you said though, it's the recent transplants *cough* Californians *cough* that make it scary.
