Default VCM shows "PAD" but ...

Hi Guys, as the title says I'm getting the code but also the exclamation mark every time I hit the brakes. Brakes are about 80% so I guess this is a sensor issue?

Hi Larry,

I think this means the pad at one wheel has worn thin enough that the wire in the pad wear sensor is exposed and each time you press the brakes, the wire grounds against the brake rotor and triggers the PAD lamp. If I'm not mistaken, on the later XJ40s there are only two wear sensors, one on a front wheel and one on a rear (maybe at opposite corners). I was able to repair our sensor with a little J.B. Weld epoxy to re-seal the exposed wire. If the body of the sensor is damaged so it won't stay clipped into the new pad, you can use the J.B. Weld to adhere the sensor in the pad. I did this for several pad changes before I finally decided to replace the sensor before our son took the car to college.

BTW, if the PAD lamp remains illuminated, that means the wire in the wear sensor has worn completely through and the circuit is open. That happened to our sensor too, and I just soldered the wire together, resealed it with J.B. Weld and used it again.

Cheers,

Don

Hey Don, the "PAD" doesn't stay on, just when I press the VCM ..thinking I may have buggered one of them up when I jacked up the front - might have snagged the wire with a jack stand. Brake pads have lots of life yet --will report back what I find!

Thanks

Larry

Late update but the problem wasn't really a "glitch" - the rear pads were worn to the sensor, replaced them and fitted a new sensor when I did the rear shockers.
