XJ40 Headlight

Hi,
Could anyone tell me if a 90-94 model XJ rectangular headlight fit a 87 model XJ40?
Regards Tim

Hey there Tim,

The XJ40 began in 1988. If you have the rectangular headlight assembly, it probably has to do with the fact that you are in Sydney (not sure!). The rectangular headlight assembly is by far a better quality set up than the rounds, although most favor the look of the rounds. I personally think the rounds on the XJ40's look like an afterthought as opposed to the older, and then later Jags that are "molded" into the body.

My beautiful 1994 has rectangular lamps and I love the look and the functionality (much better than the rounds).

Find a wrecker as the dealer will charge you a King's ransom.

Good luck.

I'm a fan of them as well.

Didn't the XJ40 begin production in '87 outside of the States, and even late '86 in some areas?

Opinion... My car has the round lights, which I like very much. But, if it had the squares, I don't think I would like them less. I think the square lights are very handsome and fit neatly into the distinctive angularity of this era Jaguar.

Cheers!
Scott

Sorry, but I can't claim that car. I just wanted to show an awesome front end and that was a sweet pic.

The rectangular 'Fishtank' headlights are interchangeable with the twin round ones on any model year. The fittings are the same and the headlight units just bolt on to the front of the car.

Limegreenclown is correct that you will need the correct bulb failure modules - one for each side. These fall into three types:

1986-89
(to VIN524374) - DBC3180
This is the early module which can suffer problems from dry solder joints. Luckily the later modules (not 93/94) are all interchangable.

1990-92
(from VIN52437 to VIN643649) - DBC3266
(from VIN643650 to VIN667828) - DBC5240

These two modules will also fit your car and will be very reliable units.

Lastly, units from VIN667829 - 1993 and 1994 model year modules will NOT fit your car since the plugs on the loom end are incompatible. However the 93/34 headlight units themselves will fit.

These part numbers are for non-UK, non US market cars.

UK bulb failure modules will work with your car but have a dim-dip function on which the headlights glow dimly when the side lights (small lights in bumper) are running.

USA bulb failure modules are different and incompatible since they incorperate running lights in the bumper's sides - and the rectangular headlights have two bulbs in them.

Thats a very rare version of the XJ40 - the Sovereign Gold. Only about 200? of them made and a sky high spec.

Rectangular headlight

It looks like the non US cars have a slightly smaller rectangular headlight than the US cars. Note the larger gap between the grill and the edge of the headlight. I think I like that style a bit better than the US version.
