12.3L\100km (19.2mpg US) on long drive.....Good, bad or ugly??
 

Hey Guys and Girls, took my beast (s3 4.2 bw66) for its first long drive since I got her. acording to the trip computer (which did match odo, google maps and the gas tank), I managed an average of 12.3L\100km (23.1mpg UK, 19.2mpg US). It was on fairly smooth roads, undulating at times, some vigerous passing manouvers, quite a few small towns to slow down at. I was generally travelling between 100 - 120kph (60 - 75mph) (any kiwis on here, please read that as 100kph only hehehe) My average speed was a little over 80kph (50mph).

I feel this is quite good for a heavy, 30 year old big 6 cylinder car. My family van that is a 2litre 4 speed auto would be about the same fuel consumption.

Any thought??

Seems in the ballpark to me, I average around 13L/100km on the highway and 16-17L/100km around town.
Doing a 2000km road trip over Easter (equivalent to Brisbane to Sydney return)so I will be able to measure again to check my calcs.

You didn't break the law did you?

Sounds pretty good for the size of the beast, I havnt checked mine but would sure be happy with that.......don't even ask about the rangey!

That's about as good as it gets for real world driving.

if you consistently stay at 60-65 you can likely nudge the number up to about 20-21. In my Series III experience anything over 65 mph the consumption really starts going up and knocks the hell out of your averages.

The best Nix has ever done for me was 18+mpg US on a long, level, relatively straight stretch of I-5 between Red Bluff and Sacramento holding between 75 and 80mph.

Under 'normal' driving (which is Not sedately as I have my foot through the firewall a LOT) she gets between 15 and 17mpg US. But I don't drive this car for fuel economy. I drive her as a fashion accessory and an extension of my somewhat flamboyant personality.

Yeah, I seldom get concerned with MPG's!! The trip computer in my jaguar isn't adjusted. It will spew data. But, it must be nonsense, except for the time of day!!!


Way back when, in some critter, I did the manual check. Fill up, record the odometer reading, drive a bunch refill, read odometer, do the math and get a number. So, thn what....


My Jeep has a fairly complex trip computer. Easier numbers to read by size and location. Throttle touch does amazing things.


Elinor: at the speed you drive at, the mileage is durn good. if by some miracle, you cut it down 10 or 15, the numbers would surprise you. But, as it matters not to you, so.......

Not at all. Any kiwis reading this post will see that I stuck to the 100kph (62mph) speed limit religiously. (even though did nudge 140kph a few times while passing enthusiastically)

I covered the first 700 km yesterday/last night and managed to get

12.5 KM/100km
22.5 M/gallon (UK)
18.8 M/gallon (US)

Not bad considering 65-80mph fully loaded boot and rear seat. (last trip we did 13L/100 km) Has been tuned and tweaked since then.

About to add another 500 km today for the next leg.

Doing 4 nights away, Brisbane-Armidale(via Coffs Harbour)-Narrabri-Goondiwindi-Tenterfield(via Bruxner Highway) then back to Brisbane on Monday.

How are the roads out near Narrabri......been a long time since I've been that far west?

Armidale to Gunnedah was pretty good(via Tamworth). But Gunnedah to Narrabri if a bit chopped up. Still better than Queenlands central and western roads. We are actually at Wee Waa tonight, an hour or so west of Narrabri. Taking the scenic routes and tourist drives where we can.

Got the road train route up the Newell Highway tomorrow to Goondawindi, that road is pretty good, just depends on how much traffic stops you passing the road trains.

Looking forward to Sunday, 243 km of great winding roads from Goondawindi to Tenterfield and taking in some special stages of classic rallying just off the Bruxner highway.

Managed around 12.3L/100 km for the complete trip, 2154 km we used 265 litres of fuel.(95 octane). One loose bolt on the rego plate and a cracked windscreen , not bad for a long trip I suppose.

Missed the classic rally car special stage by an hour, bloody daylight saving crossing from state to state.
