Default 1971 Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 Project - Suggestions Welcome!

This is my first buy into the world of classic cars, and into the world of Jaguars. It was a barn find, by a son whose deceased father had left it in a shed for decades. The son started a restoration, but after running out of money part-way through, the mechanic who was doing the restoration bought it off him to continue the project. During this time it was never registered. Over 10 years it had a full bare metal re-spray, the interior was re-upholstered, the brakes and suspension were replaced, and the engine was reconditioned however it was not quite at the point where it would safely run. The car was originally a manual, however it was converted to an automatic during the restoration.
Just over a year ago, the man I bought it from purchased it. He took it to a Jaguar specialist here in Brisbane to have it brought back to a reliable, running state. The engine was finished off, and triple Weber carburettors as well as extractors were installed. A year was then spent chasing down parts to bring this car closer to its original state (plus a few extras) including dashboard bits and pieces, gauges, switches, fog lights, wheels, etc.
It is now in great running order. My plans are to convert it back to its original manual state, find some extra bits and pieces that I think would improve it. This will hopefully include the plastic cover over the interior ceiling lights and the exterior reversing light, and getting the fog lights wired and working.
I hope you all enjoy the pictures I upload as the project progresses.

Your car is gorgeous ! I think the red is a great color on the series 1. Enjoy the car and enjoy making it the way you want ! I agree with returning it to standard shift, much more fun ! Keep us posted.

Hi Brady, the pics of the car look great. Doesn't look like too much needs doing, if mine looked that good I would be a happy man.
I will be collecting a stack of parts this weekend, once I sort them and label the items claimed by other members you are welcome to drop over and sort through what is left. there might be be something you are chasing.
What dash bits and pieces are you chasing ?, text me,PM me or post it in the thread linked below.

Welcome to the forum. Fantastic looking car you have there, hope she gives you much pleasure. Great idea to restore to the manual box and preserve her rarity.

Cheers,

You are a very lucky/smart boy to have that as a base to work with. Well done.

Welcome to the forum, hope you get to catch up with guys in QLD.

PS: forgot to say, please post engine bay shots. It surely cant get much better than a triple webered Jag motor, can it?

Hi Brady, I just had another read of your post.
Did you buy the car off Jamie? If so I have a set of reversing lights here I sourced for him after talking to him at the all British Day.
Yours if you want them, you'll know by these pics I took if it is your car. Can't be too many restored red XJ6's getting around Brisbane needing reverse lights.
I have a couple of sets, the one in the pics and one I scrounged earlier from a retired Jag mechanic. I don't think my lenses are a lot better but the chrome doesn't have as many bubbles.

Default Anyone else have S1 reversing lights like this?

My 1971 XJ came with this light setup... it just bolts onto the license plate light assembly above.. works great with LED bulbs..

Brady, we like pictures of anything you are doing with your car.
If you have a project under way we all follow your progress if you have a thread for it, and it helps the next person doing a similar project so see how it is done, or anyone who has done similar project before you will give you all the pointers you need to make the project go as smooth as possible.

Wow, I'm envious haha! Beautiful example of a series 1. Looks like the PO took great care/time with his end of the resto. Can you post some pics of interior please?

Lovely car.
Love the Webers and exhaust manifold. Do you know if the head was modified or changed?
