1974 Jaguar XJ6 s2 power steering noise PLEASE HELP
Hi guy so I have a 1974 Jaguar XJ6 and she has a terrible wining/crying sound coming from every time I turn the wheel I have cheacked the fluid which is clean and perfectly up to level I have cheacked the belt tension and it seems fine so please could somebody help
also does anyone know where the belt Tensioner tensioner is because I am wanting to change the belo due to the fact that it’s a little old |
The fluid level is OK now, but what about in the past?
Perhaps air in the system? Maybe, but the systems are usually self-purging. More likely, IMO, is that the pump is worn out or has been injured by a previous episode of low fluid. Sometimes changing the fluid helps quiet a noisy pump. Might take 2 or 3 changes to get all the old stuff out Cheers DD |
hi yes that is very help helpful and useful I will try that technique out but is there any other ways to solve

It may come down to replacing the pump. Another thought: check the hoses and pipes for any kinks or restrictions. Cheers DD |
May or may not work . Bleed the system. Two ways.
1. Jack up the front wheels. trans in P. Hand brake on. Chock behind rear wheel. Start the engine. Turn the wheel left and right, lock to lock. 2. Go to a large empty space. drive the car I several figure eight patterns. More fun!! Carl |
Outside the square thinking, and what I had on 1 car here a very long time ago.
The previous owner had the steer hoses replaces with made up units from a mobile Hydraulic van type operation. Very good job, and probably cheaper than Jaguar hoses in those days. BUT To get the return pipe to sit as needed, he had used an adapter, NO IDEA WHY, and that was restricting the return fluid to the pump, and that pump squealed. Removed the return line, and had another made WITHOUT that adapter, and all sweet in Jaguar land. That Saginaw pump is common across many cars of that year and into the 80's, and strong, but will NOT tolerate low or stale fluid. |
