1974 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 heater
 

I have a 1974 XJ6 Series 2 with heater problems. The heater appears to work but on one setting and the right hand dial to adjust the temperature won't stay in position - turn it and it bounces back to where it fancies being. I've heard that the heater matrixes on these cars are weak and expensive to fix. Does anyone have any ideas before I commit the car to a garage and an unknown bill?

yes, first step is to order the Factory Service & Shop Manual CD and troubleshoot it yourself. If you believe everything you hear then you will be paying very high repair bills to someone who already did their homework.

These cars are essentially easy to work in, so the first Rule is: Do Not Panic.

I am not very familiar with the Series 2 but Iknow the Matrix in these cars is not weak.
It probably has a bad TEMP switch, and in order to replace it or repair it, you should have the Factory Service Manual, and I do not mean a Haynes manual!!

Note that I said REPAIR IT, becausechances are you might be able to REPAIR the TEMP selector switch. It sounds like something simple. Plenty of Jaguar parts suplliers worldwide, even down there in Argentina, near theSouth Pole of planet Earth.

And we have Ken in this forum who might find one for you.

Assuming you have an ac/climate control carand not a "heater only" car, the left dial is what adjusts the temperature. Its just a potentiometer. If it won't hold the setting I can't think of anything to doexcept replace it....which is a stinker of a job.

As for the heater working on just one setting, do you mean it does not respond when you adjust the temperature, or the fan speeds won't adjust, or ????

Thanks. I found a local Jaguar specialist here and had a word with him. The lever that connects the dial behind the dashboard has probably got stuck due to lack of use (my XJ6 was in storage for 9 years). It's an easy fix but getting at it is the problem! I think I'll put on a hat and gloves and just wait until summer!

Bumping an old thread because my problem is somewhat related.

I also have a 74 XJ6, and I have a problem occasionally where the heater decides to blow on a medium-strong heat for no reason. It's after the car has warmed up and I can understand the extra heat (it is also a LUMP car), but the blower seems to turn itself on high. Fiddling with the knob doesn't do much, other than increase the blower speed.

Any idea why? Thinking of just pulling a fuse and seeing if that'll stop it, which I assume will. Would rather fix it though.

By far the most common cause of these weird symptoms is a faulty amplifier. There's really no way to bench test the amplifier....it's diagnose by replacement. Not cheap.

But it *could* be any number of things, including a faulty cabin temp sensor......which is pretty easy to test.

If you have the factory service manusl there are some good tests. Better yet is the factory issued climate control training manual.
