I have been pulling my hair out trying all sorts of searches to see if I could figure these numbers out for myself with not success. The VIN, though not the current standard 17-digit VIN, probably tells things like year, sequence number etc, but what about the crudely stamped tag riveted on the driver's side (USA) inner fender?
As I have posted in another thread, the car is new to me and I am trying to sort out options, paint codes, interior colors and options, etc...
The 8L 51339L would be the original engine number I think. I don't know what those other numbers would be. Maybe one of them is the transmission number. I believe the paint/trim codes would have originally been on a separate tag with just those 2 details on it.
I recall researching the VIN number of a series 2 donor car years ago. I don't recall that there was much to be gleaned from it. BW indicates the borg warner transmission. You're right that the 53527 or some portion of it would be the sequence number. Good luck in your search.
That sounds reasonable. I did read that BW was Borg Warner. I am hoping to get confirmation on the interior (carpet and seats) color and what code denotes leather vs cloth. I believe all the cars destined for the US came with leather. Other parts of the world, including Canada, could get cloth/velour. Would there be a number that would denote if the Kent wheels were optioned? Did all XJ6 Coupes come with AC, power windows, etc...

UH is the code for 1977. Seems 2J denotes the 4.2 motor. LHD chassis numbers in 1977 started at 53067. So my car at 53527 was the 460th car made in 1977 with a total of 833 made for 1977. 44 made in Squadron Blue. Of all XJ6 Coupes am I correct that only 233 came to the US?
Did you already come across this in your search for history on the car? Looks like someone entered it into the XJ6data website back in 2011 when it still had the original engine and seats.
If you don't have it already, I have a pdf saved with the interior trim codes for a S2, noting what the headliner color, pillars, door trim colors etc would be for each Basic trim colour.
