1984 A/C Problem
 

New member here - my name is Trevor Dean.

I'll be getting this '84 XJ-6 in a few days.
This is a georgeous car and is mechanically sound. Interior is excellant and the body has only a few very minor rust areas. Mileage is around 76k and is accurate. I'll be the third owner of this car.

The only issue is the A/C ststem. I'm aware that the a/c does not work properly. It will need to be changed to 134a, and that will not be an issue I believe.

The current owner said that the system worked well until abut 3/4 years ago with one unfortunate issue. It seems that after the system was operating for several hours (?), it would suddenly dump water on the floor of the car. It would then continue to cool until it was again time to...leak internally.

I am a mechanic and classic car restorer (mid-60's performance Fords); having been doing so for many decades. I have never worked on a car of this type but, have always loved these cars, and the price was certainly right. I suppose this will give me an opportunity to add to my tool collection!

It's been sitting for 15 years, with only an occasional start-up and (perhaps) a very short drive around the block. The car is mechanically excellent, tranny rebult 15 yrs ago and has less that 12k miles on it. Nearly no rust.

Is the a/c issue a complicated fix, or something I might address myself? Sure is a heck of a lot less working area than on my 63/64 Galaxies! Any assistance will be appreciated. Thank you....... Trevor

Sounbds like the evaporator drains are clogged. Easy fix.

The drain tubes protrude thru the floor and are easily visible on either side of the transmission, just aft of where the transmission and engine come together. A gentle probing with a straightened coathanger will usually clear the clogs and probably dump a load of smelly water on your face in the process :-)

Thank you for the assistance. I didn't see my question on the 'main' part of this forum, so I must not be posting incorrectly. I'm only familiar with Networks 54 "FE Forum", which is quite different and easier (for me currently) to navigate.

Evaporator drains can usually be reached from the under side of the car with a long nozzle blow gun. Locate them and use the blow gun to blow the debris out, then wait for an ice bath once the debris are cleared :)
