1985 xj6 no power to cigarette lighters
 

both cigarette lighters front and back are not getting any power. they are used for electronic devices. my owners manual does not show a fuse used in either panel. does anyone know where these are powered from? thx for anybodys help

The fuse is hidden in the console, right side, usually forward of the right side ashtray. You'll have to do a bit of (gentle) rooting around in there to get your hands on it. The right side console "cheek panel" can be removed to allow acccess.

Jaguar's love affair with hidden fuses was nothing less than a cruel joke. Once you know all the locations though, it becomes "an interesting design feature" :-)

Here are a few others, from memory:

Horn fuse abouve the battery
A/C fuse on right side of heater case
A/C fuse on amplifier ground wire
Radio and seat fuse in console, near left ashtray
Rear light fuses in the trunk
Power lock fuse below right side fuse box

Not all of these are actually hidden but you do need to know where to look :-)

There may be others which escape my memory at the moment.

Doug has such good info! My cigar lighter blows a fuse almost every time I plug in my phone charger, it is very frustrating. Besides being just inside the "cheek" panel on the right (passenger) side of the dash, just above the radio area, it is an inline fuse, so be sure to look for a wire, not a box. I keep a little baggie of replacements in my glove box.

Is the wire gauge big enough to support more amps? If so, just swap in a bigger fuse. If not, since you want the car to do something it doesn't, consider running a bigger wire gauge to the front lighter port and fuse that. The stock wire will probably be fine for the run to the rear port.

I have a slightly different issue - but related so thought I'd post.
Car: S3 XJ6 VDP

1) Neither front nor back lighters working
2) The purple wire to the front lighter was off so I reconnected
3) Lighter in front works!

Issues:
1) Lighter is on even when ignition is not on (not sure this is right)
2) rear still not operating

Now, I don't know if this is related, however a few days later after driving quite a bit and also working on (or attempting) getting into the driver's side door to get to the lock solenoid, I become the victim of a parasitic drain.

My first thought was that it might possibly be the constant power cigarette lighter, so I found the fuse (thanks to Doug's suggestion on accessing it via the passenger side cheek panel), and disconnected.

I haven't done a full check after taking the fuse out, but wanted to know if anyone has faced this (or other) cigarette issue and the outcome.

As follow up. It's been a few hours since disconnecting the front lighter fuse and the battery is holding up well.

I'm going to assume, therefore, that the issue is in the lighter wiring...somewhere. Being no expert on electricals, I will try to track down a short of some sort..god help me.

I've had no power to either of the lighters for a few years now - replacement of the in-line fuse in passenger center footwell behind carpet didn't fix my problem so it must be a wiring issue but I have no idea as to how to proceed. Me, too, for decades. But, the S57 clarified so much for me. Much like
the map reading I learned in the military.


Here, see the symbols page. Relays, switches, etc. Then the color code.


Then think function. From where does the power come from to energize?


And the component location pages, invaluable. Even little drawings of what they look like.


At present, I'm messing with head lamp conversion. Want fresh wires and connectors, as I am using new lamps!!! I got a pair of sockets via Rockauto. Store credit to be used. don't ask...


A bit of mislabeling? For use in fibre optic systems!!! Three black wires. Three posts in a triangle. Logic says the center one id ground. So, which is high beam and which is low beam?


Two ways to figure that out.


1. The S57 schematic.


2. I've an old set of buckets with sockets. I can see the colors on the wires in spite of some light blue overspray. Who was painting on the under side of the wing???


No hurry, leisurely working it out.

Sad, it was once nice and green???? Now, it looks more like the dry hills around here. But, my neighbors look no better. Well, one just
quit and installed a desert land scape. Not all that bad. Another just laid on a layer of chipper fodder.
