Your car could be either a Series III XJ6 or an XJ40. Each has different heating systems.
Does the car have 4 headlights or 2 ?
If it's 2, you need to head over the the XJ40 forum.
If it's 4, you have a late Series III. The A/C controls are pretty simple...... set the temperature on the left hand knob. Set the right hand know to the middle setting (Auto) and you are done. You should have fully automatic temperature control now. This obviously assumes all kinds of things are actually working, ie A/C compressor, interior temp sensor, blower motors, vacuum flap system.
I suspect you are going to have an XJ40 though.....
