Default Gas tank switch not staying pushed in..

..Hi guys,

XJ6 '84 here, this AM I went to push the button to switch fuel tanks, and the button wouldn't stay in. If I hold it, it will draw fuel from that tank, but when I let it go, it returned to the other (now empty) tank.

Thoughts?

Buy a new switch or disassemble the old and try to fix it. I think you'll end up buying a new one.

Cheers

I appreciate the offer..I ordered one from Rock already. If it doesn't work or look right, then I might take you up on your kind offer!

thanks!

These switches were one of the main issues with the Series 3 when the new (privatised), Jaguar management under John Egan took over from British Leyland. They are easily dismantled for fettling, but you could put a new one in if you can find one, as the internals are a bit Micky-Mouse.

Default Rock auto has them for $20...

..so replacement is at least cheap. Does the button itself just pull out of the dash for replacement, or do I have to get it from behind?

As I recall, it is pushed-in to fit it, as there are molded-in clips that snap onto the rear of the housing. You have to be careful and may have to push these in whilst pulling on it to remove - suggest something in plastic not metal. A plug/socket connects the wiring.
