Default 4.2L engine number/year

I do not have a "numbers matching" XJ6C.

My fender plate says VIN# UF2J 51008 BW
It also says the engine # is 8L 20640L

On the back of the block, drivers side I see 8L 40403L

Any way of telling what the 8L 40403L block is out of? Year? Etc.?

My guess is probably going to be around the 77/78/79 model year..
I've tried to record the engine numbers of some of the cars I've parted.
I had a 75 Coupe that had eng# 19630L (car #50566)... then another Series 2 (not sure of the year, but I think it was 77), that had 29294L .... by 12/83 the number had jumped to 149199 (!)
Hope that helps narrow it down a bit...
Cheers,
David

If there are hiccups, so be it, thats all I have.

The V12 stuff is also there and I will scribe that when I feel like it.

ENJOY.

I can't remember the full number at the moment but the engine number in my car from a 1975 donor XJ6 begins 8L165**. I don't have the actual build date of the donor car.

I understand that series 2's had engine numbers with a 7 prefix and series 3 had an 8 prefix!!

Have a look at XJ6data.com. You may not get exact information, but the engine numbers are listed for some cars, which may give you an idea.

Regards,
Andrew.
