Default '69 XJ S1 4.2. Manual Od conversion to classic rally

This is my recently purchased S1 manual. I am a fan of classic rallying, and this will be my new ride. I am planning my conversion now, adding some safety, power, trimesters, suspension (Harvey Bailey) and other things to the car. Especially winter rallying, Nordic countries and events such as Tulip Rally. Any advise / opinions or enthusiasts who did the same thing ? Please do share some knowledge. Try to keep the car as original as possible, but some things needs to be changed.

So there are still a few of the early cars around ! So how did this one escape the scrap man ? It looks too new to be in original condition.

Thanks guys, to avoid misunderstanding; the car was restored in 2003, so its definitely not original anymore. The car was in one family for 40 years, both on Swiss and Dutch registration. With regards to the rallying part of it, but that's what I enjoy most. It will keep it looks and appearance.

Upgrade to series 3 front brakes and rotors. They are a complete bolt on. The series 1 front brakes are unvented and may fade or boil the fluid after some spirited driving.

Default LHD with wipers that Park on the right?

Beautiful car... you could help wind resistance by removing the Leaper!

My '71 cars wipers Park on the drivers side? Which is correct???

I am still looking for the front window replacement trim pieces?

Did notice that before, but you are right. Seems like more logic to me if they park on the drivers side. Removing the leaper would help, but I was more thinking of adding some torque and bhp.

That was the first thing I noticed in the post, I just assumed it was a drivers side conversion. Hundreds (or thousands) of US cars here that have been converted to RHD and have the wipers park on the left.

My 72 is a California import, and I can only assume it is an original LHD. Wipers park on the left. An other odd thing, the bonnet release lever is on the right side! Does that make sense? Maybe it has been converted at one stage after all.

Yeah, original or otherwise, too nice to race. That is what so called rallies really are in what ever guise. Some tougher than others, but same idea, competition!!! Adrenalin flows, car pays the price. Although at times the driver and/ assistant get it.

Perhaps, it is a grey market car. Somewhat original RHD, but changed to somewhat LHD!!

As to more torque and HP. The standard stuff works. Just cubic money....

The manual with OD is intriguing. Messing with it to get all six speeds readily available sound neat for rallies.

Your car do as you wish....

Talking Hood release is on the RH side!

I always thought was odd, I do have the LH handle now and was going to put it in the car... mine must have been a RHD initially...

How would you make the wipers park on the other side??? I would like that better... when driving the wind lifts them up and parking on the
other might not do that as much???

My solution to more HP and Torque - install a modern SBC - LS Version today... would be a nice "upgrade" but doubt whether the old
OD would handle the added power? Can always upgrade to a Tremec manual trans at the same time.

I owned this car in 1999, bought it from "The Garage". Asked them to do some "restoring" but unfortunately that was a big dissapointment, and I had them take back the car.
Good to see it is still around and in good condition.

Wow. This is an old thread but the original poster's car is a twin to my current '73 Series 1 with Manual OD.
