75 XJ6L

I was browsing the old interwebs and came across this old girl in need of help. Owner said it had been parked in the yard and hadnt run for 15 years or so.

Looks like something was using it as a home for a while.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...c47a3b43c0.jpg

It needs a bit of everything. Interior is bad, body is rough, paint needs attention (it actually needs a repaint), fuel, ignition and brake systems need work. I just couldn't let it be parted out or sold to a junk yard.

I decided I'd get her going and hopefully pass it on to someone that will enjoy it for another 40 years.

What's your plan?.....give it a cleanup and see what you've got to start?

Stigram Aug 30, 2015 01:14 AM

I'm in the process of cleaning it up and going through the basics to get it running again. I wont repaint it or do a bunch to the interior.

Nice to save the old girl....keep us informed on your progress.

I went into the glove box and found a bunch of car-wash receipts and registration cards straight back to 1975. I cant believe they kept them. Seems the car was sold in Sunnyvale and spent a fair amount of time in Pebble Beach.

i couldn't get into the trunk when I picked it up (all the locks were seized). I freed up the locks and found a bag of tools and spare. For some reason I figured it would be empty or stuffed with junk.

Looks like it will keep you busy for a while.

Stigram Aug 30, 2015 03:06 AM

Looks like it but I'm hopefull it will run on its own soon.

A worthy project indeed. You might or might not, be amazed as to what a good washing followed by "compound and polish" of the paint will do.

Can't tell, but it seems you and the car are stateside. Rusty area or dry and hot. The car seem to point to the latter.

With a huge amount of fortune, the engine is free to turn.

Always fun to look in the boots, cubby's, glove boxes and under the seats. A tale of the car, indeed.

The parts houses will love you. Belts, fluids, filters, battery, tires, etc.

Now, if the lelectrics will respond...

Enjoy and share with us, so we can.

Carl.

The car is located in California which is good because it has been dry for that few years. It has no rust which could be an issue especially around the windscreen.

Ive done the preliminary stuff to make sure the engine turns freely (that was huge because i didnt want to get into a rebuild or swap).

The tires suffered from dry rot and could not hold air so i got a fresh set.

I'm fairly certain the brakes wont work. The reservoir also suffered from dry rot. I know its possible to upgrade to s3 or use Mitsubishi pieces but i want ti keep it as original as i can so i have to find one somewhere.

Pulled and replaced the plugs.

I have washed it and started restoring the paint to the pest of my ability.

Also polished the wheels a bit. Im pretty happy with the way the came out.

Stigram Aug 30, 2015 10:30 PM

I decided to start in on the fuel system. I knew this was going to be a problem because the previous owner left both tanks wide open. I removed the left side tank drain plug and...nothing came out. I added half a gallon to the tank and that didn't drain out either .

Nothing initially came out of the right side tank so I used air to unclog the drain. A huge amount of dirty water came out with a bit of fresh fuel I had added earlier.

What a Wonderful old Lady!!!
I'm amazed how a little care has shined up that fender! I can only imagine what the rest of the car will look like once you get all the bird poop off and Everything polished.

You're gonna have So much fun with this! For sure it'll keep you busy for some time.

The wheels and new tyres look really good. If the paint comes up as well as the wing - it will be stunning! Best of luck with starting the old girl!

Stigram Aug 31, 2015 04:54 PM

Mostly more cosmetic stuff today.

I'm surprised that is looks as good as it does.

Daf11e Aug 31, 2015 11:57 PM

I actually like the colour.

Stigram Sep 1, 2015 12:30 AM

I think if it was another color I probably would have passed on it.

Stigram Sep 1, 2015 02:29 AM

Pulled the grille for a cleaning while cleaning up the front end.

I'm not normally impressed with Green cars, but WOW, does this one look good!
Now that you've got it all clean, give it a treatment with Meguiar's Quick Detailer. It makes even black paint look Inches deep.
