Default 77 xj6c water in fuel or fuel filter?

My 77 xj6c is sputtering. Dies in Drive gear, I got it home in 1st gear (with a lot of pedal pushing). Has a new chevy v8 350. Tak is supposed to 1/4 full--per guage. The dual tank set up has been replaced by a single feed, tanks joined with a hose. It sat yesterday in a heavy rain, so I should put in HEET? Or is it more likely that the fuel filter is clogged? My first guess is the supposed amount of gas is wrong...put in 3-5 gallons and try again.

I agree with Roger.

However, if you DO have water in the tanks, make sure to check the rainwater drains just below the filler caps. They often clog and the filler cavity will accumulate water which can migrate under the filter caps and into the tanks....especially of the filler cap seals are weak

Cheers
