85 XJ6 Factory Wire Wheel
Reviving my dormant Series III required replacement of 14-year old tires. It turns out one of the factory original 1985 wire wheels is "shot" according to Woody's Wheels in Denver; numerous cracks, etc. The other three are fine and holding air.
I would like to obtain a replacement wheel that is compatible with the factory originals. Thank you for your help and guidance. P.S. The tire dealer said I should just put a tube in the tire, but Woody's said not such a good idea. Any thoughts? |
Personally I am not aware of factory wires for the S3 but many of these models in North America were sold with Dayton Wire Wheels installed by the dealer. Is this what you have? Maybe post a pic so we can identify yours.

Right, it will almost certainly be a Dayton. If not, perhaps Zenith. But, in any case, you are correct that it would not be a 'factory' supplied wheel. The last Jaguars to ever have factory installed wire wheels were the last of the E-types, circa 1974-75

I agree with Greg and Doug, the wire wheels must have been a dealer-installed accessory, or installed by the first-owner, most likely Daytons. there were no factory-installed wire wheels in any Series 3, or Series 2, or Series 1 XJ-6.
If your wheels have 5 lugnuts each, they are aftermarket wheels; Jaguar wire wheels had a "Spinner" at the center, as you can see in my 1965 S type. I would obtain a new pair of those Dayton wheels and save one of the old ones as a spare. |
You are all right!
I researched my maintenance file obtained from the original and did - in fact - find an invoice for one set of wire wheels purchased from and installed by the selling dealer Newport Imports in Newport Beach, California.
As recommended, I will contact Dayton. Since my intent is to sell the car, I am also open to obtaining a single used wheel if someone has an "extra" laying around. |
you need to find the number of spokes in your wheel, the width and diameter of the wheels, and perhaps the model number of the wheel in question, as there are 60 and 72 spoke Dayton wheels, and it could be another brand too.
if you are selling the car, you might also look for a set of the original Kent wheels which will be cheaper than one Dayton wire wheel. Look in the classified section of different Jaguar forums. |
1. If one of those wires, of whatever genesis is cracked, I'd be suspicious of the others.
2. Yeah, a tube in a tubeless tire ahs issues. It mioght solve the leak thing, but not the structure1 3. Try David Boger at Everydayxj for a good used matching wheel. 4. Yes, unless wires is a gotta be, there are other choices. I have a set of imperfect but decent Kents in a shed. 5. I reshod my XJ with a pristine set of XJS lattice wheels. Those wit new B. F. Goodrich's look good and run great. More ways than one to ... Carl |
