86 xj6
Hello all,
My dad recently had trouble with his XJ6 not starting. He tried everything and it still has not started to this day.
I listed it on CraigsList for him the other day for sale. I had a guy, of course not interested in buying it, tell me to "reprogram the computer" or "try a crankshaft position sensor" for the car.
I just figured I'd try this last two concepts before going ahead and getting out from underneath it.

We don't have a local Jaguar mechanic. We had a lead on a guy that was an exclusive mechanic for a wealthy local businessman's classic Jaguar, Ferrari, and Maserati collection. I was given his number and we made a few attempts to contact him, but he has never returned calls. I assume he just wants to be left alone.
A shop in town supposedly hired a "European guy" for their repair shop. Not sure how much he would know about a Jag. I assume he's more of the Audi, MB, BMW, and perhaps Volvo type.
It's to the point where I'm ready to scrap the Jaguar mechanicals and throw a Small Block Chevrolet V8 under the hood. Perhaps if it does not sell, that may be a possibility.

Believe me, there is nothing so exotic about the electricals, ignition system, or fuel injection system of a '86 Jag XJ6 that a reasonably competent general mechanic can't figure out.
Of course, some just don't want to be bothered and/or don't have the right manuals and diagrams....or they've let urban legend convince them that working on a Jag is a horrifying experience.
Cheers

is there no local or nearby Jaguar Club in Indiana that you can call for a mechanic's referral? If the first mechanic did not return your calls, call someone else.

All IC engine have the same requirements. Compression, air, fuel and spark all at the right amount and the right time. So, dagnostic iare eh systm pr protoco to verify each. Then after finding the one/s that are wrong comes the fix phase.
I like to start with ignition. A jump that often works is to jump battery + to coil plus and crank.
Do, I conclude thzt the starter will spin the engine, bu that it will not fire?
The other jump is to supply fuel to the engine. quirt ether (starting fluid into the intake. If it runs for a short time, it is a fuel supply issue. O, remove each spark plug and add a small supply of gasoline, then crank. Maybr no fuel in either tank??
If you can isolate to either ignition or fuel, ypou are 50% home.
And, a compression test is in order. A zero engine isn't going to run. And one with less tha100psi will be hard to start. Experinced ears can get an idea as to just how the engine sounds as it is cranked.
In my day of hand cranking, one could fee the compression or lack thereof.
So, if you iwsh, try these ideas and report back. Other hands that know the engine better than I will take you through a fix path.
Or me?
