87 XJ6 Starter Issues
 

Hello,

I have been having a few issues when starting my car, not always but occasionally when I turn to key to start I'll just get a very loud squealing/ wailing sound. From my research it has to do with my starter I'm guessing.

Before I remove it, is it possibly the starter relay or does the starter need to be rebuilt?

Additionally, is that a tricky job, any tips?

If the relay was faulty you'd never get the awful noise.

Sounds like the starter is faulty.

Not all that hard to remove....at least when compared to a V12 Jag or some other cars. A few pointers...

-Two bolts. Get the top bolt from the top. Removing the battery gives more elbow room. Get the bottom bolt from below. A long-ish extension with a u-joint helps

-There is a transmission vent pipe alongside the starter that'll have to be unbolted. No need to remove the pipe entirely; just skooch it out of the way.

-Remove the oil pressure sender which is a few inches forward of the starter. The starter is heavy and awkward to handle. If it gets away from you it'll likely crash into the pressure sender and break it off at the stem. This misfortune has been shared by many. Don't be one of them :)

-The a spacer ring between the starter and the engine, about .125" thick. Make sure it is accounted for. It'll probably be stuck onto the starter. Just be aware of it and don't lose it

Starter relays click or are silent and do nothing when flawed.


Starters can be quiet and do nothing or can raise a ruckus. Might range from loose mounting bolts to internal issues.


Removal for inspection most likely. DIY fix or exchange. A GR starter would be tempting. That they are much lighter and thusly easier to hang is tempting.


Went through a bunch in my lump.


Long shot:


1. Ignition switch on the way out.
2. Failed diode in the cranking circuit.

Ok great, thank you to both of you! I'll have it off and repaired! My neighbours will thrilled not having to listen to that at 6 in the morning anymore!

Make sure to inspect the flywheel/ flex plate ring gear while starter is out. Badly worn teeth will shorten the life of a new starter due to poor meshing.
