Hey there fellow XJ owners! I already posted my intro in the new members lounge newB from NW Iowa and a mug shot, but wanted to jump in here and give "my own breed of cat" folks another intro. I'm on other vBulletin forums as well and chose this forum because a) you guys knew the most about Jags and b) I like the vBulletin format best.

Looks like the XJ is in pretty good shape, all 19 feet of it. Looks like you like GM, and I imagine you slready know the XJ came loaded with GM parts?

I've read a lot of your posts, you, the Ohio techie and others really have it going on. I'm green to this Jag stuff, lots more wires than I feel comfortable with. I come from the old school "if it's got gas and spark, it's gotta run." I've been afraid to tackle the blinker not working issue, as well as numerous other items. I found the thread coaching walter on his 82. Thanks, I'll start there this summer after I pull the kitty out of winter storage. Come to think of it, almost every thread in this lounge had at least some tidbits of info to help me out!:eek:

Hopefully I'll be able to help others out a bit. I certainly know I'm outmatched with these felines and am going to be looking for a good amount of guidance to clear up some of the minor issues that it still has.

you will find these cars are easier to fix than newer cars with all the unrepairable digital modules and stuff crammed in there. that's why I have kept my XJ for the last 18 years, soon to be 19. Most Lucas switches are openable and repairable.

The blinker problem is probably the stalk switch, which is removable and you can repair it on the kitchen table. But be sure to check the turn signals Fuse first, and the Hazard Switch. If the fuse is good and the Hazard switch works fine, (all four flashers flash), then you will need to remove the stalk switch, and do some surgery. No big deal, piece of cake.
After you do it once, you become an expert.

but removing the stalk switch requires a number of steps that are not obvious and if you try to guess your way, it never works, it will screw up the steering column. Remember I told you.

So here's what I tell everybody: order the Factory Service Manual CD, (forget the Haynes manual, don't waste your money).

put the Factory CD in the computer and start learning about the car. Go to the electrical section where it tells you how to remove the turn signals switch, step by step. Do it right.
Print any section you want to have it handy when you go do the disassembly, the repair, and the reassembly jobs. (the repair is not in the service manual because they want you to go buy a new stalk switch, but the switch can be rebuilt better than new by simply adding a very thin washer where the wear happens inside the switch, the washer you need is about the size of a quarter, so start looking for one now, and remember it has to be very very thin. I got mine out of a soldering tool, but you can also use a nylon washer and sand it down as needed).

The same thing is done with the Wiper switch, although the repair is different. The Ignition switch is also repairable, the A/C compressor is a GM Harrison A6, the ignition module is a Delco part, the power steering pump is a GM Saginaw, the Air Pump is a Delco pump, the transmission is a Borg Warner Model 66, the fuel injectors are used in many brands of cars, American and European,
