Automatic Transmission Fluid Series 3

Hello , I have a Borg Warner automatic transmission in my 79 Series III XJ6. What modern transmission fluid is a replacement for the Type G specified? All of the recommended lubricants in the shop and owners manual are no longer available. I did have the transmission rebuilt a few years ago and have since experienced spontaneous leakage when the vehicle has been idle for several weeks. The rebuild mechanic said the discharge is overflow from non use. It makes a mess of the garage floor and never occurred prior to the rebuild. When I checked it this week the dip stick indicated the fluid was extremely low. Could the type of fluid be responsible?

Type "F" or "FA" replaces the old Type "G".

Some use Dexron with good results but the F or FA gives a bit firmer shift

When sitting unused for a few days the fluid all drains down into the pan, essentially over-filling it. The fluids backs up behind seals and gaskets. Any slight weakness in the seals or gaskets...such as shrinkage from lack of use.... will allow the fluid to come out

Very common with the old BW transmissions....and older Ford Cs and C6s as well.

This recently happened to my Series III. Parked it for a few weeks with the car backed into my sloped driveway & now I have huge puddle of tranny fluid. What did you do regarding the leak from the seal shrinkage? Thanks!!

Replace the seals and gaskets.....or start the engine more often.

See the 9th post down in this thread. It may be the solution to your problem.

You might also want to check out this link. I recently replaced the shifter shaft seal, located on the driver's side (left) of the transmission. Not only was it bad and I replaced it, but it was pushed out of its fully seated in position and leaking fluid badly.
