BL Cars London door label Series 3 Question
Hi, I'm looking at an early Series 3 XJ6 and the door VIN label says BL Cars Limited London, England instead of Jaguar Coventry, England ? I tried searching here and Google but could not find any information as far as what label was used when. I know BL stands for British Leyland but thought all the XJ6's were made in Coventry and still labeled Jaguar, what's the story ? Thanks !

Simply, there was a time (‘65-‘84) when Jaguar was not independent, but a part of a conglomerate which became British Leyland. Corporate BL being headquartered in London, that’s what went on the label. Label (even when ‘Jaguar Cars’) reflects head office, not factory. Not sure when the label changed, but I’d imagine the cause was BL ego—then when Jag went independent in ‘84 I’d bet it went to Jaguar/Coventry pretty much immediately. |
