Brake light switch service

As I mentioned in the other thread I picked up my XJ6L Ser2 the other day. One thing I noticed was the brake lights weren't coming on. The running lights were functional so I figured it was the switch. Looking under the dash you can see the switch, it has a lever that is supposed to ride on the brake pedal. I noticed the lever was stuck and not moving. I manually moved the lever back with the pedal depressed but still no lights.

I decided to look up a replacement switch..... $50..... for a switch. So I decided maybe I can get the switch working again. Before fully deciding the switch was bad I wanted to test and make sure the wiring for the lights was good. Jumping the connecter the brake lights came on. So a little pb blaster on the lever and adjusting the switch location so it engages sooner, and it is working like a charm.

Same happened to mine. I took it out, as the switch was frozen solid. Back and forth plenty of times, and lubrication. Works as a charm now.

Is this switch supposed to be spring loaded? I have mine off (as the brake lights weren't working as well) and it seems like the previous owner had it taped on. How is this supposed to move around? Does it move freely? Spring loaded? And I just can't find too much information on this.

The lever itself is spring loaded. It should be bolted to a bracket that sits just above the brake pedal. If it is not returning to the correct position, try the lubricating oil followed by multiple swings of the lever to see if normal function returns.

I'm sure you guys know more about the Series 2 Brake Switch than I, but are you sure you are not confusing the Brake LIghts Switch with the Cruise Control OFF switch? (just curious, because in the Series 3, the Switch with the "lever" is the Cruise Control OFF Switch).

Yeah it is the brake light switch

Jose, no! :-)

The DAC1308 lever arm switch is for the brake lights, even on a Ser III. The other identifying feature is the large capacitor across the terminals

The cruise control release switch is the plunger-type switch, DAC1895

total confusion, I thought the plunger switch was the brake light switch.

Well, since I'm cheap, and trying to cut back on how much I'm spending on my restore, I just managed to create a spring that resets the switch so I didn't have to buy a new one.
