Brake Pedal Issue
 

Hello everyone,
I am new to these forums and I have a question about my 1990 XJ6 Sovereign. The brake pedal is really hard to press. I looked around online and I found out it could be the sensor and that it could just need cleaning. Does anyone know how to do this? The brakes still work and the brakes themselves have been replaced not too long ago. Has anyone come across this problem or do you know what is causing this issue? Also about how much would labor and or parts be to fix?

About your brake problem, how's your booster?
I know from personal experience that failed Power Assist makes brakes *Very* hard to push but with great effort you can still stop.

We found a booster for my 1976 S-II online at British Auto Works for a total of $282.25 delivered. If that is indeed your problem, and the master cylinder hasn't been changed in a few years, it would be a good idea to do both at the same time.

We found a Beck-Arnley master cylinder on Amazon for $181 and change. Read the installation directions Very Carefully and take your time. If you have questions come back and ask here. If you can get pictures that would be a good idea. Picture=1000 words and all that.

Labor cost isn't even mentioned here because we do all our own work.

Has yours got ABS? If so, check the pump runs for a short time when you switch the ignition on/ If it doesn't run, then check the wiring, fuses and the pressure sensor.

If it's got the normal booster, then check the boost pipe is not disconnected and the one way valve is functioning. Then check the booster as they sometimes have the inner seal split.

It may also be seized pistons in the calipers.
Has the problem sudden or gradually gotten worse?
