Id be inclined to just bypass the issue by installing an aftermarket solenoid and running a new wire for the starter switch

Cheers

After market solenoid and separate start switch????

Do you mean starter relay? If so, that will work. Caveat, neutral or park start only/ or just ignored?

Its actually a solenoid as a relay cant pass the current for a starter

You can call it a relay if you like but the main difference in the two is;
A relay has contacts that pivot where a solenoid has a bolt that is driven forward

Id fit something like this one

As the car started by turning on the ign and adding power directly to the starter
it would seem the ign switch is ok.
So the most likely causes are the solenoid or the wiring to the solenoid with that in mind Id add an new solenoid and replace the wire
Id Still replace the wire even if its good do the overall age and condition of the wiring. I would not bother doing that if it was say a turn signal wire but the starter wire is too important not to replace it and have the peace of mind knowing its now good

Cheers

I have the lucas pre engaged type starter motor with the solenoid on the starter motor. The Relay is on the fire wall.
When I tried to start it I think I could hear the relay on the fire wall clicking. The wire between the relay and the solenoid is where I put a connector and that is where I jumped it from.

So the solenoid is working fine, and I have a spare on my old starter motor that works. I think the relay is working too, my guess is the terminal on the relay needs attention. As James said, I will replace the wire from the relay to the solenoid. Possibly a new relay needed too.

Maybe time at work tomorrow, or Sunday morning.

Got it. Two kinds of starters. One with a solenoid on board and the other using a remote solenoid. In either case, a relay may or may not be used to power the solenoid and enable it to power the starter motor. .

There are.were ways to use two solenoids to energize the starter motor. Or to sub in a remote unit for the mounted unit. methods of defeating hot crank failure issues.

Thanks guys, It did fail to start again this morning(3am departure for work) but I was prepared with a jump wire with aligator clip already in place just in case.

I looked over the wire from relay to solenoid today and it looked ok and tested good with meter but connectors were loose and corroded. Replaced the connectors and all seems to be working ok. Will drive it for a few days and see what happens now.
At worst it will be a relay(Lucas 22RA), or ignition switch. But I am certain the relay is clicking when turning the key.

this wasn't a bad read on inertia vs pre ingaged:

How the starting system works | How a Car Works

[although I noticed in the basic diagram it doesn't show you the relay in series with the ignition circuit before going to the solenoid. I guess the relay is there so you are energizing a coil using low current, to close a contact using high current to engage the starting solenoid no?]

You got it!!!

There ate also 3 types of solenoid setups

1. External (not mounted to starter)
2. Internal - This does not have access to the connection from the solenoid to the starter motor
3. Internal but has access to the solenoid output. With this type you can see the jumper from the solenoid to the starter. Its really just an "External" one with the solenoid bolted to the started body

Good to hear

Default New alternator failed me.

My new alternator failed last night with lights and aircon running. Made it home with just park lights on.
Called the supplier this morning, they said bring the car in and they would swap it over. The garage next to them does some favours I guess in exchange for some of their services.
Anyway, back on the road in 40 minutes with replacement fitted free of charge, and I was going to do it myself. Saved getting dirty hands.

That's what I call service.

It' not like a V12, all bolts seen and reachable. Almost walk-a -round space in the XJ6.
