Clutch packs BW12

Hello all,

I've been trying to figure out the automatic transmission. I watched Youtube videos for hours yesterday and today I took apart a BW12.

Inside the BW12 I found what I expected. I could see how everything works. Brake band adjustment makes 100% sense, park lever on the final gear, shafts and big ring gears.. All very interesting.

But, I can't figure out how clutch packs are operated. Could anybody explain this?

Thanks

Look up planetary gear set. The clutch pack usually apply on the inside gears sets and the bands apply to control to the drum which usually affect the outer most ring of the planetary gear set. The combination of apply bands, sprags and clutches affect the planetary set in a way to get the different ratios and over run characteristics.

Thank you for the reply.

That is indeed true. The best way I've seen the planetary gear set explained is by a roller-bearing:

But, the clutch packs need to be pushed together or the outer ring will turn freely from the inner ring. There is no servo for the clutch pack as there is for the brake band, so what operates the clutch pack? What pushes the clutches together?
