Dear Daimler Enthusiasts, I hope you will indulge this small heresy of mine in creating a bonnet mascot of my own design, fully aware that such departures from factory practice are not to every taste.
Alas, my 1992 Daimler Double Six was never intended to bear one, and all those previously offered by Daimler have never enticed me. I therefore decided to develop one myself using free mesh software, guided step by step by Grok AI. I now asked a sculptor to realise it in pewter, finished to a mirror polish, from my 3D model. The intention is to install it in place of the Daimler badge upon the radiator, as with my Photoshop rendering. I attach a few images to illustrate the design and its intended character but bear in mind that I will have to redesign the mounting as the A.I. took input from the leaping jaguar base.
@Jagboi64 I had, in fact, bought one of those original Daimler mascots and found it wanting.
Following an exchange with the Secretary of the Daimler and Lanchester Owners’ Club, a wonderful chap (*), we agreed that the vertical stroke of the “D”, particularly where it meets the airflow, appeared ungainly and the very low silhouette too, was somewhat inglorious for a marque as Daimler. I had also always preferred the twin wing design, as on Rolls Royce and Bentley mascots and I decided to use those ornaments as the basis of my design.I placed my Corniche and Continental nose to nose and found that, whilst the wing angle of the Spirit of Ecstasy was preferable, the plainer Bentley wing appeared more suitable for my Daimler “D” mascot idea.
I photographed the Daimler radiator “D” badge, then placed a sheet of plain coloured card behind the Rolls-Royce and Bentley mascots and took images from multiple angles. With GIMP I removed the backgrounds and prepared a series of initial bitmap files copy pasting the Daimler “D” onto the Bentley mascot. It didn't work as well as I hoped. I then tried to simply remove the central stroke of the “B” but, again, I didn't like it. The first model, I confess, was ghastly.
I had been using SuperGrok Heavy for idiot-proof, step-by-step guidance with Gimp when I thought of uploading the entire collection of these partial bitmap results into Grok itself and request it to generate a 3D rendering of the finished concept. It produced a very good approximation. I then asked Grok to transform those renderings into an .stl file for MeshLab, but here Grok failed miserably. So I relied, again, on Grok to deliver an idiot proof step by step guide on how to use the bitmap rendering in MeshLab which I eventually ended up doing manually.
When I finally obtained the .stl 3D model, I realised that the single vertical stroke of the “D” rather disappeared in the tighter wing angle of the Bentley wings.
In a final iteration I adopted the broader, more graceful wing spread of the Spirit of Ecstasy, together with her reduced contact point at the arms which is the end result that I published here. I then scaled it all down by 80% and I am waiting to see what the end result in pewter will look like.
(*) Indeed, I encourage all Daimler owners to join the Daimler and Lanchester Owners’ Club. I have met members of remarkable knowledge and experience, jovial and a pleasure to be around; more importantly, though small in size, the Club has far greater focus on Daimler motorcars and marque history than the various Jaguar clubs.
Ascanio, did you buy and fix he car eventually? Just seen the next post! EXcellent!
Yes, I did. I found it and bought it June 2021, through an intermediary, Autokempen Veldhoven, in the Netherlands. It is now being restored near Naples, in Italy. Since it was my father’s, the intention is to return it to its original condition of thirty years ago. I would welcome your opinion on my idea to replace the bumpers with the Series II bumpers, in this thread.
I will donate the intellectual property and design to the Daimler and Lanchester Owners’ Club (DLOC). I am confident that they will allow club members to buy the 3D .stl file for use. But you would then still need to commission its realisation from a craftsman.
My preference would be to have it executed in polished 316 stainless steel, as the Bentley and Rolls Royce mascots. Unfortunately I have been unable to find anyone who can, at a reasonable price. Any help would be really welcome.
I found an artisan able to produce it in mirror polished pewter for 300 CAD, exclusive of taxes, import duties, and shipping. We are now considering how to attach it, whether a single bolt through the radiator Daimler badge housing or by metal bonding to that same housing. The base of my model will require reworking as the angle of the housing slants forward and is perfectly round. Anyway, anyone interested to place an order for the polished pewter version, with me, is welcome to do so, should I go ahead.
Louis Lejeune Ltd. would craft it in 316 steel but the cost is rather unfriendly ... Could anyone help me locate a craftsman able to produce it in 316 stainless steel at a reasonable price?
I reached out to a friend of mine who teaches at the University of Alberta per the following with a copy of your post and received the following response from him:
"Hello Ken,
Happy Easter to you too.!
If you send me the File I may be able to test the University tools.

Hoping you and Linda are well as spring threatens to arrive sometime this month!
I being to a couple of on-line forums and in one of them someone is interested in adding a “mascot” to the hood of his Daimler:
Daimler mascot - my creation - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
jaguarforums.com
He has all of the requisite files and has someone to do it in polished pewter but would really like it done in 316 stainless steel.
Might you or someone you know have any interest?
Strange question I know but you know I was always a a bit strange.
Ken"
If you want me to connect the two of you directly, please let me know at kcantor@copperwing.ca I'd be happy to act a a go-between with a more "formal" introduction.
Update: The pewter option from Canada remains under consideration but I have not heard back for the 316 steel proposal, also from Canada. I have, however, spoken with a gentleman at Louis Lejeune who has kindly agreed to make a more competitive offer for the door bronze, chrome plated (CNC 30 micron) version and include the revised base, angle, and more pronounced feather detail into my design. I'll share the offer once I shall receive it. In the meantime I can share images of Lejeune initial 3D printed models.
