Default Door Locks

The passenger side front door on my Series 1 won't open. There's no resistance on the exterior push button or the internal latch so I assume something has come adrift inside the door. Is it possible to remove the door trims with having to door open so I can look inside? Or is there some other way of getting the door open? Thanks.

@Graeme

Not sure the exact layout on a Series I but I would imagine it's similar to other XJs.

On my series III car it's only a matter of unscrewing the armrest, and one screw at the bottom of the doorpocket/speaker housing, then pushing the whole door trim upwards to release it from the door. It's a 5 minute job.

If you trigger your central locking and "listen" to the offending door, can you hear and/or feel the solenoid firing ? (They are quite violent in my Series III and I can distinctly feel it firing if I have the door open and hold the door frame with my hand)

I suspect you are going to find the solenoid has failed in that door, which could be due to the solenoid itself or the wiring into the door....
