in order to replace stuck rear calipers and intall new pads, dropped rear suspension today... alone... woooof. I'll be doing a tank drop and clean as well, since I'm in there

Check the Ujoints. They can get notchy over time.

Replace the diff seals, input seal and especially the sides one. The diff will heat up, the diff oil with thin and leak / drip down the rotor and contaminate you new pads in a hurry. Over time... A leaky front seal allows oil to blow back on to the rotors too.

Exhaust hanger bushes may be perished.

Disconnect the springs. Suspension should move freely. Pivots are all roller bearings so they should move be perfectly smooth. With no binding or reliance other than weight. Lay the diff on its side and it should more with tip of finger pressure.

Hypoid lube coming from side seals and the pinion seal does indeed manage to contaminate the pads. One of many reasons why I will be swapping in XJ8 outboard brakes in near future. I hate the smell of hypoid as it burns off when it hits hot rotors, as when descending a mountain pass and rotors are hot from use and hypoid is thin from heat of rotors.

pulled the offending calipers this evening, no wonder the car wouldn't shift itself... they are done.... toast... kaput. the parking brakes, however, came off without a hitch. roughly two hours to do what was needed to remove them, not bad.

Keep track of how many shims went where (halfshafts)

reinstalled the calipers, new pads, parking brakes, and put the cage back in the car and set it back down on it's feet... took about five hours. still have to bleed brakes and reattach parking brake cable to front of car. Can't risk having a car in that state of disassembly around here for long... code enforcement will tag it as "inoperative".

Whew, I woud have been in trouble in your area. Jaguar spent a lot of time in my driveway, nose up during the starter travail!!!

And, for a couple of years a once slick VW based dune buggy is oin my drive. But, onoy the VW wise guy/gal would know the engine is not in it's inteded place. it is on nice white wheels and good looking tires.

And, the guy across the road has about three "spare' cars. But, they are complete.

So far, OK, no neghbor fusses and the county seldom ever comes around. Not sure this "pocket' is known to them!

Isn't it just "ducky" to live in a place where government has so much control over your life? While we are at it,...can anyone tell me how many breaths they "allow us" to take per minute (prior to any exercise) Can we wax the car on Wednesdays or is that not cool / allowed ? ....Damn ridiculous - that is not my idea of living a free life...FWIW

We have meter readers that report to DMV inop cars. What part of their job description covers "anal orifice"?

Some couple of decades ago, the local cop assigned to look for blight issues had my son's circa 48 Hudson sedan towed. Not pretty, bur interesting. Unfortunately, a sedan with serious rust issues. But, a PO
had lumped in a DeSoto "little Hemi" V8. it ran ad drove quite well.


Son complained. Cops said you don't drive it. Evidence, cob web on a front wheel??? SOG, he had been over to see us the preceding day. I went to see the COP Lady Captain. Nope, we don't believe you, we believe our cop.


The tow company was embarrassed. Released the car. Waived charges.


In anther scrape with them, they kidnapped his old dog. Scraggly looking. True, very old. Cop said, our Animal service says he is a mistreated young dog. So, son came up with a picture from way back when he was a young dog. Captain said, no good, no date on the picture. Son said, better yet, compare the young pine in the picture to the tree as it now looks. Cops evaluate evidence, oh me...

Back in Lynchburg Va we had a local tow truck driver who reported people for "junk" cars AFTER he collected payment from them for bringing them home... he was getting PAID by the PD for this. Fortunately, the car community there was pretty tight-knit and his little scheme fell flat after word got around; not ONE of us (and we were many) would call him for a tow job. ANYWAYS; still got to bleed the brakes before I can risk moving her off the debris field that is the area under the cedar tree... I doubt I could stop her once she got moving NOW

On topic, but of subject. Jaguar's glass got cleaned in and out. Shiny windows make it look much better.
