engine light on and car sputtering in idle
 

I have a 1996 XJ6 with 80K miles. Today car started running rough in idle and engine light came on, blinking. Any idea what is going on and how to fix?

You need to have a scanner hooked up to your car to retrieve the fault codes now stored in your car's computer. Some auto parts stores have a scanner that will be sufficient to provide you with this information.

The most likely cause for this fault is a failed ignition coil, there are six on your engine. If that is the case, a code should be stored that will identify which cylinder has the bad coil. Send me a private message if you need one at a good price.

Otherwise, post the code numbers that are retrieved when the computer is scanned, and the picture will be a bit more clear.

Thank you for the quick reply. I was going to take my car to the dealer service dept. to check out problem. Not sure if should drive car into work tomorrow. If it is an ignition coil will it hurt the car to drive it?

you could hurt the catalyst if u drive it
