Excessive play rear wheel bearing
 

Dear members, I am sorry, but once again I am asking for some advice.
You may recall I recently completed my IRS overhaul.
I have excessive end float on a wheel bearing. I have fitted the largest shim, .150 inch and it is still out of tolerance. Could I have made a mistake in installing the inner bearing? Or have I used a sub standard one?
I will be most grateful for some thoughts.

When I did mine way back in 1990 the original spacer went back in and normal tolerance was resumed. Bearing are made to very tight tolerances, and the spacer normally is only used to correct poor machining by Jaguar of the associated parts.

So the question has to be - is the play maybe somewhere else ?

I have been talking to my friend who assembled the wheel bearings for me and set the end float to .003inch with his dial guage. He told me he thought the most likely reason for my excessive play was I could have inadvertantly put the spacer the wrong way round. Apparantly, there is a champher on one side.
I will remove the hub later, providing I can break the loctite I put on the splines and take a look. I expect it was another silly mistake on my part, hopefully, the next post will be a positive one!

Don't bother next time with the Loctite, it was only put on very late in the production life of the rear suspension due to some people complaining of "clicking" noises. It makes dismantling a PITA.

I only heard this once in my 14 years with an XJ6 Series 3 when driving very slowly over a rough track

Today I dismantled the hub, it was a bit of a battle with the loctite as Fraser suggested it would be, but it gave in eventually! I then looked at the spacer and it was indeed fitted the wrong way round! The champhered edge should be to the bearing. I then set about removing the loctite from the splines on the shaft with a sharp screwdriver, cleaned and greased the surface of the bearing and the shim, re-assembled without new loctite (thank you Fraser) and checked for play. There is a small amount of movement but I am assured it is vital to have some play to allow for the bearing to expand into after it heats up when driving. I have concluded that I must have allowed the spacer to fall off during the original rebuild, and just put it back without noticing the champher! I will certainly remember if I ever do this job again! I can now book it in for a MOT re-test and keep fingers crossed.
