Front suspension clanking

I'm just trying to plan ahead, but my '83 XJ6 has this clunking sound when going over bumps and it sounds exactly like the noises coming from this video:

1988 Jaguar XJ6 - YouTube

This guy says it is his driver shock tower mount.

I was looking through the factory service manual procedure, and I don't see where this shock tower mount is. Is it part of the actual shock/damper?

By the way, these are the easiest to change shocks I've ever seen in a car!!!

I believe he is referring to worn rubber shock bushings where the shock attaches to the shock tower. Inspect them on your car and let us know. There is no separate "mount", the shock just has a threaded end through the shock tower that is cushioned with a sandwich of two bushings.

There is another source of noise, the anti-roll bar bushes, which wear out, so check these out, plus the bushes on the links.

At the top of the shock there are two rubbery/plastic bushes to insulate the shock from the car body, about 1.5" iin diameter, and about 1" thick, with large washers on one side. Eventually the one on the inner wing side gets worn out and squashed up so the shock, now being a bit loose at the top, can now bang against the car body as the suspension works. I believe you can get these bushes separately. At the same time, the bottom bushes should be replaced as these will likely be worn out. Before you do all this though, make sure the shocks themselves are not shot.

Thanks. How do I make sure the shocks are not shot? I have tried pushing down on the corners and the car does not bounce repeatedly or make noise. I guess I will check them for leaks. I think I found these cushions separate but they are almost as expensive as a shock!

I'll probably replace the anti roll bar bushings as well just because they are easy to get to.

Thats about it ! No bouncing and also no leaks. Modern good quality branded shocks last a long time today. It was not always so as my own experience showed with an '80 XJ6

Ok, I bought new upper shock bushings (set of 4) for around $30 shipped on Ebay! Should get them by the weekend! :)

While you're at it, have a look at the anti-roll bar mounts and links, especially the links, as the bushes don't last long at all, and the cup washers corrode away to nothing.

pdog2000 01-24-2012 10:16 PM

the bushes on my links were causing a similar sound...only when turning left...

amcdonal86 01-24-2012 10:20 PM

Turns out the sound was the upper shock bushings. Replaced it and the noise is gone. However, there are other suspension noises--I believe they are coming from the sway bar bushings, but I'm not going to bother with them yet as they aren't that annoying.
