Default Front Suspension Rebuild Manual

Does it exist? I pulled the whole subframe out of the car and am currently disassembling it. I need to know the order of reassembly and torque specs for all the bolts and basic tech info to put this back together properly.

Never heard of a separate manual for that. The regular shop manual covers it all pretty well.

Cheers

The front suspension on the XJ6 Series 1, 2 and 3 was the same throughout its life, but the dampers and springs varied. The springs are very powerful, and you really need to use the factory-type compressor up through the middle of the spring. These springs can kill if released suddenly.

You may not know, but the top and bottom balljoints for the later XJ40 are a retrofit and last forever, unlike the old ones, especially the lower ball joint with its adjuster shims etc, which dates from the Mark 1 saloon of 1955 !! It is totally inadequate for modern cars and tyres with the cornering forces that can be generated with wide radial tyres. Lemforder make the ball joints and they are not expensive.

Do not forget to note the position of the shims by the top ball joint; these must go back as found. Note also there is normally a shim (fairly thick) between the steering arm and the caliper (common fixing bolt). This MUST GO BACK AS FOUND. People that have left it out and just screwed down this bolt have distorted the arm and some have broken leaving no steering.

I did not know that. So you're suggesting that I should replace the balljoints with ones listed specifically for the XJ40?

Or are the current reproduction ball joints for my '82 okay to use (they fixed any issues of the old ones)?
