Fuel Gauge

I havea 1980 Jaguar XJ6, the fuel gauge doesn't work on it.. Need to know what to check and how to check it, I've never messed with fuel gauges or any of the related components, so I don't really know what to look for, please help, thanks.

Does it work on one side and not the other? The most common failure is the fuel sending unit. You have one for each tank. One side should still work.

Afflict, just my two cents worth, Ken is right about the fuel sending unit. Another possiblity. On my 85 XJ-6, when I first got it, the button on the dash that changes from left to right tank had one of the wires disconnected. Once reconnected, the gauge worked as it should.

RE: Fuel Gauge

My 85 XJ6 fuel guage went to empty last week as I was driving along. Neither tank would read at all. As I continued to drive, the guage stated to read, slowly and not smoothly. After reaching about the right amount it dropped to empty and stayed their.
I tried looking in the manuels for a wiring diagram, but mine did not have color codes in it. I had no luck trouble shooting it.
Today I filled the tanks and wrote down the mileage, planning to drive 250 miles and just refill again. When I started the car the guage worked fine on both tanks.
I will drive it enough to burn out some gas and see if it acts up again.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

mine has no response on either tank - just sits buried on "E" no matter what.

RE: Fuel Gauge

The sending units have a tremendous failure rate on these models.
