Fuel gauge stopped working
Series 3 fuel gauge reading empty (common jaguar problem I know!) But tank is at least 3/4 full. Basically can gauge be removed from dash easily to check connections and where is tank sender unit so I can check both. Then I can isolate the issue hopefully. Cheers JJ.

Yes the gauge can be removed. Most remove the speedo (or tach) first and gain access that way.
There is a sending unit in each tank, accessed by removing the tail light I suggest testing the circuit by grounding the sending unit wire for whichever side is in question. Remove tail light, locate the light green sending unit wire, use a jumper wire to ground/earth the light green wire, turn key 'on'. The gauge should rise to 'full'. If it does, everything in the circuit is OK and the sending unit must be faulty. If it doesn't move to 'full' then you can begin checking wires, connections, etc Cheers DD |

Lucky us. There are two tanks. Each has it's own sender. Access is through the tail lights. Fiddly, but doable. The pump is in the boot, just behind the spare tire. The tank selector valve is there as well. The tank selection switch is on the fascia. Left in, right out, I think. That is where I would start my diagnosis. Select tanks. any difference. Oh, just quizzical. Perhaps the tank is empty!!! Just read an article in "Hot Rod on fuel gauges. Truck quit running. Guage indicated fuel in the tank. Old fashioned method. Yard stick belied that!! No gas... If indeed, your tank is half full and he guage reads empty, the float may have sunk!! The sensor is a variable rheostat operated by an arm with a float. Similar in a way to a toilet tank valve. Check and report back. I and/or others will pitch in. Carl |
Yup, Doug posted while I was typing. My slow typing delayed by sips of morning coffee.
He's probably on second cup or more... Carl |

Yep, earthed green wire and gauge worked. Removed sender and float. Only reads full or empty, nothing in between. Swapped it out with other tank sender unit as I never use the other tank and all seems Tickety boo! Many thanks everybody. JJ.
