fuel pouring out of gas cap

I bought a 82 xj6, will add it to my garage later, starts up flawlessly but when i switch to the right tank gas starts spewing out of the gas tank at the gas cap. Has anyone had this happen and how were you able to fix it? Runs perfectly when on the left tank. Thanks in advance.

Spews fuel out of which tank?

You probably have a problem with the changeover system. A typical scenario is that fuel is being drawn from one tank but being returned to the opposite tank...causing the opposite tank to overflow.

Thanks for info, I will be doing some testing tonight. It spews fuel out the right side tank when the switch is changed to the right side.

I *suspect* that, with the right tank selected, fuel is still being drawn from the left tank but unused fuel is being returned to the right tank....thus overfilling it.

do you believe it to be the return sending unit? or is it the change over sending unit?

My guess is that the return valves are OK but the changevoer valve....that's the one just aft of the spare tire...is faulty.

I just went through the same thing, you need to remove both of the rear wheels. There is a cover over the valve, remove both valves and keep the separate. Put 12 volts to them and one will close with 12 volts and one will one with 12 volts. If they do nothing when you apply 12 volts you need new one. I saw them on parts geek.com for around $40.

The changeover valve in the spare wheel well can be troublesome.

I remember going up a long hill near Burford in the Cotswolds in the early 90s with my Series 3 returning from holiday, trunk absolutely full up. Low on one tank so hit the fuel changeover switch - did not work, so struggled into a layby halfway up, and had to unload the whole trunk load !! A quick couple of taps on the valve body got it switched over, and away we went after reloading the trunk. Tap time = 5 seconds, unload/reload trunk 10 minutes.
