Genuine or aftermarket?

Started rebuilding my 74 series II motor.Mains and big ends are still within tolerance for standard shells, not bad after 300k, the bores will need to go out to .020. So here is the question, I have been quoted $795.00 plus tax for a set of original Jag rings, or through a local aftermarket store I can have the last ever set of oversize Jag rings in his stock for $100.00 including tax.
Anybody have thoughts on this?

Wow - that is a huge gap in price. Personally I would go with the aftermarket rings. It's likely you'd be payiing 800 bones for the leaper on the package. The only caveat is if they're made of chinesium - offshore brands.Who knows - they may even be manufactured at the same factory.
Having said that - I have yet to rebuild my SII 4.2 so I'm speculating on cost alone. Others who have used both versions will chime in....

How much are the +20 pistons going to cost to go with those rings?[or are the pistons in that $795?], i paid $70 for standard rings x6 on ebay.us

Hi anarchy, Tauranga is my home town. Have you tried "Joe Chong's" engine rebiulders on Tenth Avenue, Kevin Ban is the dude to talk to there according to my Dad who still lives in Tauranga.
My Dad is getting on and Kevin was a school mate of mine in the 80's but My old boy reckons it is still the place to go. Kevin was an apprentice there in the 80's and took on a life sentence.
If "Joe Chong's" is no longer look up Kevin Ban,Steve Bryant or Chris Rynex. Any of those 3 are still in the industry or the know and can point you in the right direction(from info I got tonight). Sorry, can't be much more help, but maybe these guys will be a contact for you if you can find them....All old high school buddies of mine, and working in Tauranga.

Hi Richard(Hooter) have you got that Series II of yours on the road yet,if so check out this thread. If it is not on the road come along and sign the JF Banner anyway, I have spare seats, family is staying at home.(and an esky with cold beer)

The Third Rule of Acquisition plainly states:
"Never pay more for an item than you have to."
Unless you're one of those people who likes to brag how much you paid for this or that.

Thanks guys
Turns out the cheap rings are genuine after all. Genuine GM that is. They are the same ring as a Holden 202. Didn't come with a leaper on the box but a GM logo will do me this time. Thanks for the heads up on Joe Chong.

Neat, huh. Neither Jaguar nor GM are likely to make rings. Each sources from vendors that do that. Some engines are designed from off the shelf stuff as pistons and rings and some are special per specs'. Lots of crossover, though. Just a material and dimension thing.

So, as long as the brand is a recognized one all is well. But, the material vs cylinder finish is important. As well as bore clearances. Not to mention end gap. Chrome rings vs steel or iron?? Some slip in easily, others more brittle and need extra care on introduction to the bore.

Aftermarket doesnt mean same or greater quality than OEM

We just bought new piston rings for refreshing out engine prior to this weekends track event & the replacement rings were iron as opposed to the OEM steel piston rings that were in the motor.

Bogus.

Look out for crap like this.
