Headlight trickery
 

Well, being a new member as of yesterday, I told you that I would be asking questions. So it begins. My 1985 XJ-6, 4.2. About two weeks ago, had my headlights on low beam. Turned them on bright, and the two lights on the passenger side went out. Both lights stayed on, on the drivers side. Returning to low beam, the one on the passenger side came back on, all as it should be. Next day, I played with the headlight fuses, moving them in case they were corroded. Possibly out of coincidence, not sure, but they started working as they should. Been working correctly ever since.....until tonight. Same thing happened tonight. Low beam, to high beam, and the right side went completely out again. Played with the fuses again, but no go this time. Of course, going back to low beams worked, again. Just thought I'd try to get some ideas before going out tomorrow to check the fuses again, and the fuse block. Gotta be out there anyway, installing 2 new thermostats in my XJS. Thanks in advance. Geez, I figured someone would have commented about this. Guess I'm the only Jaguar owner that ever had an electrical problem!!! :o) OK, so here's what happened. I suspected the fuse block needed cleaning, since this happened two weeks ago, and by spinning the fuses in their holder apparently cleaned a little of the corrosion off the fuses, or fuse terminals, and started working again. So, today, I removed all the fuses on the left front fender fuse box, and used a small wire brush to thoroughly clean all the terminals. Also did the metal ends of the fuses, and now the headlights are working like new. Gotta get some electrical grease to coat all the fittings next time I go to town, as well as do all the other fuse boxes. Well, hope this helps someone in the future. Keith.

oh no, My low beams dont even work, i can only use high beams....this is a work in progress as well.

Tap on the headlamp relay (lightly) and see if the low beams don't come back. This fairly common. Then once you have a new relay you can beat on the old relay as hard as you want, or, at least until you feel good.
