Hood Release Issue

For those who have been following the Ongoing Trials of Basil the XJ6™, I'm at an impasse. The head is too badly warped to be fixed, so I'm now on the hunt for a new one.

But, to the question at hand. The hood (since I'm American) won't open. The left side is latched, the right is not. The handle wont release it. I'm hoping there is a manual way to pop the latch. I noticed a hole in the wheel well around the location of the latch, but I don't see a way to pop it.

Any input?

Thanks!

Chris

Is your car sitting level,as sometimes if the car is sitting low or high on one corner the twist stops thr release of the hood.

im in the very same position with my 420g (pretty much has same system as the xj series), cant open bonnet at all regardless of how much brute force or ignorance i employ. i dont think there is any other release mechanism, i may try removing the headlights to see can i remove it at the hinge.........ill let you know how i get on. meanwhile if anyone else can help?????????

The series III XJ6 has bonnet release holes in the front wheel wells. Remove the rubber blanking plugs and use a thin lever to operate the spring loaded bonnet pin latches.

good to know had trouble with my xj6 before, in other news got 420g bonnet open, small rubber grommet behind glovebox gives access (limited) to catch mechanism and popped it open.

Okay, this is an old thread, but my cat has been sitting for the winter. There is a hole in the left side (driver) wheel well, toward the rear of the wheel that lines up with the latch. I can't seem to figure out how to release it, though.

Any instruction?

When you remove the rubber plug from the wheel well, shine a small flashlight in the hole. You will see a tab with a round hole in it. Insert a screw driver in the the hole in the tab and lever the tab toward the dashboard. Moving the tab releases the latch and the hood should pop up. Good luck!

Mine got into a bind a couple of times. The relief hole just aft of the box for the extra key on the left wheel well didn't work!!

So, I used a 'Tommy bar' with a rag to protect the paint. Inserted at the rear edge of the bonnet and just a bit of a push and the bonnet jumped free. No scars, either.

Then did a realign and all has been well. Oh, and a bit of grease on the pins.

Mine is just a tad off, but as it works I'm not messing with it

Tis a balance of tight enough to stay closed and to open when unlatched freely.
There is a lot of tension on the springs around the pins.

For the next guy with this problem, these pics may help

Don't be forgetful and leave tools in your fender rails, then slam the hood shut and then find out one side is latched while the other is not and the release won't work:icon_doh:
