Default How do you take a lock out of the front door?

After a paint job, the front door locks in my Series 1 XJ are acting funny...

Drivers side turns the whole lock assembly when locking and unlocking the door.

Passenger side will not turn at all.. I have both front door panels off and cannot figure out how they are held into the door? The parts manual does
not offer a good clue... new used ones are the way now.

Service manual says to pry off the retaining and remove the lock after taking off the clip on the rod.. there is no clip?

Parts manual shows the key lock cylinder as being removeable.. I would like to retain the same keys...

Any help would be appreciated!

The door sheet metal where the lock passes through should have notches and is not perfectly round. The corresponding lock barrel is keyed to fit and has a C shaped clip that goes around the lock barrel and holds it in place inside the door . You have to install the lock barrel from the outside passing through the door. I hope you have kept the individual linkages in order. There should be little sheet metal formed clips that hold the linkage rod in place. They snap into place holding the rod and keeping it engaged with the handle lock. Don't forget to replace the round rubber outside gasket the goes around the lock barrel. I am assuming that the series 2 and 3 are similar. Now is a good time to soak them in 3 in 1 oil..

Sunchip:

Many thanks. I have similar issues on my 83. Right door lock doesn't turn at all. On left door, the tumbler merely spins and does not lock or unlock. Inside, the paddle switch nicely locks up with a satisfying "clunk'.

As I suspected, no fix w/o removing door cards. Not in the near future...Summer, mebbe. When away, I'll merely leave any valuables in the boot. And watch where I park. At homke, safe in the garage.

But, thanks, I see the issue. I printed out the material. It will join the other stuff in my Jaguar lore collection. More than needed, but still getting the hang of my new Epson Workforce 2630
all in one.

Default Series 1 lock is like Series 2

I have the Jag CD with the parts manual... no part names are shown so you have to guess what parts does what job... S3 door lock has a obvious clip like most american cars... can buy them everywhere and there use is easy to understand.

Note the first picture... one of my locks has the dual legged retaining clip the is supposed to be in the two "slots" in the door - bent straight to one side.. one clip is still in the door. That lock works but the key turns when used....guess someone else did not know how they came apart?

Passenger door is missing the "clip" that holds the retainer in place and someone used epoxy to hold the lock into the door. Am slowly chipping it off as there is limited access even with the door panel off. Have to reach up from below and carefully use picks etc to try to remove the epoxy..

David from Everyday XJ has "new parts" on the way to me.. once they are
in my hands I will get more aggressive with the passenger side epoxy.

I had the exact same problem, I found the culprit was a round sheet metal clip with two tangs facing the outer door. I made a new one, fixed it. you'll find pictures in this thread

Default Epoxy in lock hard to get out.

My local parts place had five new NOS S1/S2 door locks in stock. Seeing one in your hand makes it all make sense... the parts manual does not show
the correct dimensions of the actual "prongs" that fit into the door slots... it came with the gasket and all that I need to fix both locks now.

I will exchange the lock cylinder in the new lock for the old one so I do not have another key...

WOW, Roger, you have an Olde parts house manned by "Experienced" guys!

In this area, if the vehicle is more than 7 or 8 years old chances are they don't have Anything for it, especially slow movers like 45-50 year old door hardware!

Default So Cal Jag Parts place

Exotic Car Parts at 923-D North Central Avenue, Upland, CA 91786.. Phone is 909-946-1809. Only about ten miles from my house! Try them out when looking for stuff... they know me.. tell them Roger sent you!

Have a lot of new and NOS Jaguar parts for all models back to the beginning and forward to the modern era. Great personal service and they fix Jags at
the joined shop side of the businesses.

Repair person and owner are both very experienced and helpful. No body parts but all of the other odd stuff that we need.

My other place to shop is David Boger at Everyday XJ... between them I can find all that I need for my car.

Great stuff. As I recall, it was in the late 70's that a local
software company developed a program for parts houses
and hardware stores. A Point of Sale system. Inventory control
a salient feature. Keep a supply of fast moving stock and dump the
slow! Ouch. But, for the most part, good business. I do recall a visit
or two in respect a loss. The CFO drove an 8-6-4 Cadillac.
Interesting, but tech and sales flop!!

In about 76, I bought an interesting 56/51 Jeep pickup. Lumped with
a 283 SBC. I actually found pedal pads in an old tech parts house in
nearby Concord. On the "bargain table"!! Some SOB stole mine at the BART lot.

We still have a "real' part place, NAPA nearby. It's guys use the computer, but also rely on experience.

Default Are S1 and S2 locks interchangeable?

Hi,

I ask as my S1 RHS lock has failed - the circlip is broken. I can only find BD44149 online and some adverts describe them as ‘S1/S2’, others as S2.

It is slightly different as uses tangs rather than a circlip to be held in, I think.

Thanks for any help!
