Increase RPM and backfire through carb!!!
 

Hi again,

I'm slowly working though the issues and managed to get my 74 XJ6 S2 running after years of sitting idle.

It ran pretty rough and blew a lot of black smoke!! Figured it was the stale fuel and thanks to everyone I figured out I was running on the wrong tank (the tank with very very old fuel).

I dumped 10L of fresh fuel into the good tank and she started okay, with much less smoke (after running it for a few minutes) but it runs very very rough, like it's missing. It just cuts out after 30 seconds or so of running too. Also, when I rev'd it up, it sounded much smoother but then back fired through the carb and cut out.

I am no mechanic :(

Any ideas where I should start focussing? I know, bit of a vague question sorry, I welcome all suggestions and will try to check them all out!

Hi Dan, I'm no mechanic either but if you would like I could drop over some time and have a poke around under your bonnet with you,I'm only 30 mins away. I have played with HS8's a fair bit lately. I'm out of town in New England for now but will back in a few days. PM me if you want some help. I have got mine down from leaving two black circles on the front of my wife's car and using 21 l/100km to 12.8 l/100km all thanks to help from members here.
There is a local supplier at the back of the Gabba for SU parts,got the details at home.

We're all sick with colds in my house at the moment, but once better I may take you up on that offer.

I ordered an inline spark tester last night and will make sure plugs/leads/etc are all okay. I have a sneaking suspicion based on the misfiring it might be as simple as that (or at least I hope!). Either way I will let you know, and given you're so close we will definitely need to catch up...would love to see your 73!

The '74 may????? have Opus electronic ignition. If so that is trouble with a BIG T.

If it is a contact points system, I am thinking the points & condensor are toast, and/or the coil itself.

The Lucas points distributor has a SMALL pigtail lead inside the distributor that connects the LT terminal on the side TO the contact points, and is common for breaking, OFTEN.

The SU's probably have jammed pistons in the bell chambers, and a simple clean, of both items, is a "service procedure" that has probably been forgotten many years ago.
