It's doable, but not a straight swap.
Jaguar used the TH400 behind the 4.2 6-cylinder in the Daimler limosines
You'd need an adapter to mount the trans to the engine, #19 in this illustration

Plus a different mounting, shift cable, gearshift.....perhaps driveshaft.
John's Cars offers kits to do the same thing.
A 400 wouldn't be my first choice behind a 4.2; not enough advantages to justify the effort and expense, IMHO.
Cheers

Why? Is your BW66 toast. They're a fine transmission in my experience but the 400 is a beast. I have a BW something behind an all origional coupe I have. I brought it to a tranmission shop to replace a leaky front seal...and they adjusted the band. It went from shifting good to shifting great.

hate the cable
I'm running a 700 R4, but behind a BBC with 3:54's - love the combination. Think I would have liked a 4L60E with a controller better - no cable.
I liked working with John at John's Cars. Trans mount was first rate, I'm sure his kits for four speed auto's to a six would be of the same quality.
Cheers

Agreed - I have his "quarterbreed" kit in mine - replaced the BW66 with a TH350 a number of years back.
