Keys for Abandoned Jags
Hey all!
Long story short, my friend’s family purchased a storage business and it came with two jags that have been abandoned for several years. We’re wanting to fix them up, but I’ve never worked on a jag before and I fear it will be a huge undertaking.
The only picture I have of the jags (they’re out of state) can be found Here. We’re going to look at them in a couple of weeks.
My biggest concern is getting a key cut. I believe they’re X300 and XJ40 jags, unsure of the year, but I googled the keys and they’re those weird stick keys. Can a regular locksmith cut this key if I get a blank? Or will I have to have them towed to a dealer?
Any other words of wisdom for me?
Thanks!

Welcome aboard Nic, may I suggest you place an introduction (your current post will do) in the New Member Section where you’ll receive a warm welcome and links to the two appropriate areas for your 2 jags. This section is for older models than yours......Good Luck!
Some regular locksmiths may have the machine to cut Tibbe keys. Or not. You'll have to call around. In any case you'll need the key codes. A Jag dealer can probably help you with that as they would have access to the Jaguar data base....although by now one wonders how long Jaguar will keep that data available for older cars.
Around 10-12 years ago the Jag dealer made a duplicate key for my X300 for about $85 and sent it to me via US Mail. I had to send them proof of ownership, of course.
You are correct on the model identification: XJ40 and X300

These are a ford key the same as Sierra's Mondeo's and the X Type.
I took the drivers door barrel apart on an X Type and removed the innards and when you look at them you can work out what the number for each disc is and hence the key number.
The next issue will be that the key in the X300 particularly will have a programmed chip in it and without this the car won't start.

Nic might catch a lucky break if he's in the USA....as USA market X300s did not use the chipped keys!

Like Doug, I've purchased replacement Tibbe style keys from the local Jaguar dealership just by presenting proof of ownership of the car. I've also used a company called Triple-C in Arizona to make tibbe keys based on giving them the code for the key which is just a series of numbers 0, 1 or 2. The company has a good reputation and was just featured in my Jaguar club's monthly magazine as a good resource. They say they can do keys through 1997, but I don't know specifically if they can do keys with a chip. Good luck.
